Off to the big smoke.
« on: November 27, 2016, 03:34:21 PM »
Well I'm off to the big smoke of Brisbane in the next week or so and it's not for pleasure.
Last week I was diagnosed with Bowel Cancer. Bloody big shock. I've never been in hospital before and I'm just a little bit Shit...g myself. Anyway any of you guys and gals out there who haven't been checked for this cancer please book in and do it asap. I thought it would never happen to me and no family history of it. Also if you have a spare prayer please send it my way. I just may need it.

Sol, in the face of adversity, keep a positive look on life and it's achievements. While we don't know what the future holds, I'm sure within the myswag family we will all be thinking of you and yours at this time. You know you only have to ask here if anyone can do anything to help and if we're true to form you'll receive pm's from just the right people who can help and guide at this time. Hoping all goes as well as can be in your circumstances and keep us updated on progress.

I know it's not quite the same but my Dad had colon cancer twice, once when he was in his 70s and the second time he was 90. Knocked him around a bit but he bounced back. Has left me with a legacy of having to have 5 yearly visits to my rear end from a Channel 7 camera crew, but a small price to pay to evade the menace.

I, too, can sympathise with your plight and wish you well, and like Scarps offer the advice to stay positive. The cruel irony is that sometimes it hurts those around you more than you realise.

All the best Sol. Keep ya chin up if you can, there may be a great outcome. My brother was diagnosed 6 or so years ago, had surgery and treatment and has been all clear and healthy since. We'll be thinking of you.

Hi Sol, best of luck and technology to you.
Did you find it with the govt sponsored bowel screen, I got my second kit December 2015 but sat on (pun) for a while as I was in the middle of chemo for prostate cancer and when I asked my oncologist she advised me not to do it as my cancer was growing against the rectum and may have given a positive, anyway I opened the kit and read the booklet and found I could opt out and opt in again later, that was my second kit, part of the gov program.
It is definitely a jolt to get that diagnosis, 14 months on my psa is down to .12 from 29 plus, so I am OK at the moment. I have a couple of good neighbors  and a lot of work colleagues who are very supportive.
Hang in there and as friend  of mine in Darwin who is going through chemo for Bladder cancer says, keep harping on your mates to get TESTED regularly for everything.
Cheers.

Caught early, you have an excellent chance. Sadly a member of our extended family finally died from bowel cancer 1 1/2 weeks ago at age 31, but I hope and wish yours isn't advanced.

At age 31 is rare and rotten luck whereas we all need to be aware of the usual risk period as Gummint Health is-
http://www.cancerscreening.gov.au/internet/screening/publishing.nsf/Content/bowel-campaign-home

Essentially that faecal blood test is an indication of pre-cancerous polyp/s that bleed and if the test is positive it involves day camera surgery to remove them before cancer develops. If you have a family history of bowel cancer advise your GP and they recommend you do testing at a much earlier age so pay attention-
http://www.cancer.org.au/about-cancer/types-of-cancer/bowel-cancer/
There's no Great Evil conspiracy against consumers within engineering, manufacturing and supply. Just the many tradeoffs incurred to satisfy diverse tastes, priorities and wallets. But first comes all the insatiable Gummint eggsperts, nanny-staters and usual suspects.
