CGear Multimat or Kings Mesh
« on: November 01, 2016, 08:02:32 AM »
Would like a better annex matting than bog-standard garden mesh I currently have.  Sounds like a lot of people have the CGear matting, but it's bloody expensive.  Is the Adventure Kings mesh effectively the same ? (https://www.4wdsupacentre.com.au/products/camping-gear/camping-accessories/adventure-kings-mesh-flooring-3m-x-3m.html)

Kings 3 x 3 $34.50
CGear Matt 3.05 x 3.05 $199.

Or perhaps the Kings mesh is just garden mesh from Bunnings?

Looking at the photos of the Kings product, it looks to me just like shade cloth.  The CGear is very different to shade cloth.

I will let you know when my Kings mesh finally turns up. I expect it to just be heavy grade shade cloth, hemmed and with eyelets installed.
Should do the job okay I reckon.

CGear if you don't need to put pegs in it

Oztrail Ultramesh if you do need to put pegs in it

Have you considered these two options:

Kookaburra Annex Matting - It only comes in weird sizes, 2.5 x 3/4/5/6 but is really nice, soft stuff. Nowhere near as durable as CGear though: https://www.snowys.com.au/annex-mat

Oztrail Ultramesh - Comes in the size you're after, 3.05 x 3.05, but is still fairly lightweight and shade cloth-like: https://www.snowys.com.au/ultramesh-tarp

For what it's worth I have had a CGear mat for 10 years. It's been through hell and only has two holes in it where a plastic foot came off a camp table leg allowing the weighted table to bore a hole through it.

The only down side to it is that the two sheets can slip across one another giving you that pucker moment you get when you get out of the shower and your foot slips on the wet tiles. Otherwise it's fantastic.

Sounds like they've had a good innings, Joff. They don't use 'em for helipads for nothing.

i was in the superstore on Saturday looking at the mesh mat . It is good for the money but no more than a thick grade shade clothe with edging sawn in and eyelets. Would be good for under swags and side awnings but it ain't no clear mat, and I will get one for that use as the size is appropriate for that. I have a cgear mat for our floor outside our caravan awning and would recommend the cgear particularly due to the size options available.
Haven't used the cgear mat for the helicopter yet but hey if you can afford the helicopter you can afford the cgear mat!!

Try walking on the CGear stuff before you buy. I find ours a bit rough on bare feet and can second Joff's slipping fears.

I have 2 C gear mats and they are awesome!! keeps sand at bay and once we had a really wet night and water running through our annex, while the water still came through the matt there was little to no mud..

We use the annex matting like this stuff from Oztrail..

Oztrail Annex matting

You can get it from most hardware or camping stores off the roll. Much cheaper than the CGear product and quite hardy. Heavy enough that it doesn't need pegging down and it doesn't complain about having pegs driven through it.
We've had a length of this for about 5 years and it's still going strong.
Cheers, John.

So Cgear if basically 2 layers of shade cloth with a fancy weave? or am I missing something?

pretty much, but it works great.. I have never pegged my C - Gear matting down as yet as I usually hold it in place with my Annex poles..

C- gear is also really easy to sweep out if needed but if ever camping on sand this stuff really is just brilliant..

We had a CGear mutimat for years and its a fantastic product and does everything its claimed to do. Sand and dirt fall readily through the mat. As for not requiring it to be pegged down is a little incorrect. Its ok in a normal day, but winds will pick the mat up and people walking on it tend to drag in the edges. However it does have D-rings for pegging it down and we usually only did the four corners.

The only thing I didn't like about it was the drawstring carry bag that comes with it. Its a tight fit and take a bit of effort to put it back in the bag. Still I would still buy one these regardless.

Its true they are a little more pricy than others but you get what you pay for.

Well, in the same sense that that a tyre is just a rubber thong made round with a fancy steel bit in it.

I'm not sure whether the stuff is a type of shade cloth or it was woven special for this application but I have tried two layers of regular shade cloth in the kids sandpit as an experiment (this was 10 years ago). For whatever reason the CGear mat lets the sand fall through but it wont come back up no matter how you squish it into the sand. the two layers of shade cloth didn't fair so well.

Add to that the tough way it's sewn together with the D eyes and double stitching and it's a pretty good bit of shade cloth with a fancy weave.

I hate spending money (in fact, refuse) on over hyped rubbish and blinged up glamping accessories but I'd buy another CGear if was in need of another ground sheet.

I've had the Camec version for a couple of seasons http://caravansplus.com.au/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=12730. Not sure how long it will last but it's been durable so far, it's quite a loose open weave so you can put a peg through it to secure awning feet for example.

Love my cgear matting..

#  Totally takes control of sand, etc.
#  Keeps squelching mud more or less at bay

Only complaints are:

##  The price
##  The bag it comes in was a failure / unusable
##  For the expense disappointingly; the D rings are just chrome over steel - and quickly go rusty and ugly..
You get out and in to the world -- you take more @#&$. …You climb a little higher, ..you take less @#&$.  …Till one day -- you're up in the rarefied atmosphere -- and you've forgotten what @#&$ even looks like….  Welcome to the layer cake son.

I have discarded the bags for the C- Gear mat and made up some bags that are sewn onto my rear wheel covers on my camper, I put the mats in here that way I can pack them away if they are wet and or dirty and I don't have to worry about them contaminating anything else in my storage box etc.

Have had the cgear matting for about 18 months and it's great. Nothing comes through it from below and it's tough. Lost a few of the d-loops but there are heaps of them and we only peg evry third one or so anyway. Price was the only downside. That and arguing with the wife about whether to go green or grey side up.

Theres about 100 threads on Cgear if you have a search.

And I read several. But you'll notice in my OP the question was actually about the Kings mesh, and comparing the 2.  I have the Oztrail mesh (not bunnings stuff after all), but find it requires daily sweeping, and even still, we get black feet from walking on the stuff.

Sold a kidney, traded the Prado in for a Yaris, re-mortgaged the house, and managed to scrape enough together for a 6x3 CGear matt.
Cheers all.
