The episode I watched had a bloke spend his entire wage on survival stuff whilst his wife's wage covered the living costs.

The kids spend their weekends living in his survival basement in gas masks and survival suits, why, ol'mate reckons the Chinese are going to call in the US debt.....,

Do these dudes spend to much time believing the tabloids?

The sad thing is - those SHTF guys think they are the real deal; and 'have it all sorted' for the EOTWAWKI .... Good luck with that one....

We've watched it a few times (mainly for a laugh) before it started getting just too ridiculous & annoying  >:D  ???

The people they focus on are usually prepping for 1 emergency only - an epidemic, economic collapse so no food in shops & so on. But what happens if their particular S doesn't HTF, but a different type does  ??? You can have as many types of medicine as you like, but if the power grid shuts down for a month, they won't do you much good; same as a massive vege garden won't help against a Spanish Flu outbreak.

Some of them also haven't thought things through very well. As mentioned, one bloke has turned his suburban block into one big vege patch so they'll still be able to eat when the economy collapses & there's no food in the shops. Nice idea, but he's got no plans or means of protecting his crop or defending himself - don't you think the hungry bikies may just like a meal?

Another one is teaching his kids to defend themselves & hunt with bare hands, knives & crossbow only, because when the SHTF, there'll be no more rifle ammunition available, so don't rely on firearms  ??? Seriously  ??? There's so much ammo out there that if you lined up every rifle, shottie & pistol in the world & fired them continuously, I reckon it would take you a month to get through the stockpile - apparently the US alone produces 12 billion rounds a year - & he's worried about running out  ???

There are online communities totally in the right direction with EOTWAWKI. ...   but the tv series "Doomsday Preppers" is just a modern times verson of the mockery that surrounded Noah as he constructed His Ark....

I guess the one good to come out of the series - is that it may spark curiosity in the 5%; (or sadly the .005%) of the sheepie population: to investigate more...

There is a real movement out there prepping and sharing information - but like nearly all things mainstream -- the telly ain't "the source code"....   LOL

I saw one of those shows the other day and noted they were prepping for the generally accepted doomsday that was going to happen sometime in 2012...

On that basis I think you'd find a lot of these shows we see on free to air TV were recorded quite a few years ago.  I'm guessing though there were a lot of disappointed preppers when 2012 came and went....

Had a Mormon friend who was convinced the 'second coming of christ' and the end of the world as we know it was going to happen in 2000.  He and his family stock piled drums of flour, rice and grains, built a bunker and filled it with bibles and crucifixes....  For the last 16 years I don't reckon he's had a meal without rice as a side dish  ;D

Spot on Cammo, with those two stepping up it would worry the hell out of me if they were here !

As it is, who knows what BS Trump will lead Aus. into if he kicks a goal.

Better race out and start prepping , first call Dan Murphies.....max out the M/card, who'll be left to collect....lol ;D

Since it's only American weirdos that do this in any numbers it stands to reason that when the Shit does hit the fan it will be predominantly American weirdos that are left after the event.

This in itself is a good enough reason not to prep but instead to embrace oblivion

I watched that show once after a mate told me about it and we had a good laugh.
What a bunch of nutters dedicating their whole life to that. I feel sorry for their kids who get dragged into it.

On the other hand, when you see what happened in the grocery stores around Brisbane when the 2011 floods hit, it would be frightening to see what would happen if something really did hit the fan.
I remember going into the grocery store to pick up a bottle of milk, there were people running around madly filling trolleys and the shelves were emptying very quickly.
I didn't even bother getting the milk, it was a mad house!

You only need to go into the grocery stores on the evening before the shops will be shut (Xmas day/Good Friday) and people will be going crazy like it's the end of the food supply.
It is only the reaction of the people in a crisis that would make the SHTF.

My extent of 'prepping' is to make sure we have a couple of weeks of food in the house at all times. We live on tank water so that's not an issue.
Where we live we could easily be flooded in, so need to be a little prepared.
Same as going camping, I know people who will only take the exact amount of food for the days they are going. What happens if you get flooded/stranded/car breaks down and can't get back to civilisation? Always take extra supply of tin food/etc for emergencies.

Bit of common sense goes a long way.
But as for building bunkers and setting up 'bug out' trailers.... nah.

Hahahah Doomsday preppers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqOJUSCzHtY ..
Sadly after seeing the Shite that went on in Yanky land after Hurricane Katrina wiped out the southern states,And that was just from a storm and not something like a country wide collapse [ depression etc ] . I can see see why a lot of people are worried about whats going to happen if things fall in a heap over there .
After all most over there  live in much higher populated areas than we do with a lot less regard for each other ..
As stated you only have to see what goes on around here the day before a long week end .

I remember the one where some bloke was showing his kids how to shoot and he took the end of his finger off somehow. Off to hospital and back again with it all bandaged up- Hold on , why didn't he fix it himself because there won't be hospitals when the SHTF. ;D  Good drinking game would be to watch episodes and have a shot every time they say " Bug out "

When the Brisbane floods were on stores in Logan were running out of fresh food, seems to me it won't take much (i.e. a week without power) to have minor chaos from the café crowd when they don't get their latte fix. Having the CT ready to go not only makes weekend camping easier but helps if getting outta dodge for a few days is on the cards.

Who remembers when Longford blew up and Smelbourne ran out of gas. Lotta smelly peoples back then with no hot water or cooking facilities. Think we with campers have a bit of a head start on the rest of the poor people with not only the gear to cope but with also the nowse.

Lol. Lived through that in the late 80's when gales took out power to half of England. My gran just got her old parrafin stoves out and we had hot meals and baths every night. The neighbours ended up coming round to cook and have baths too.

Recently our oven blew up (literally). We didn't replace it for 3 months because we just used the Webber.

It's a thing in Australia too. We sell stacks of Back Country Cuisine freeze-dried food to a few folks that are prepping. They're really open about why they're buying it. Definitely less of a gun 'n' ammo focus among most Aussie preppers.

There's plenty of 'take homes' in their argument though. Like, those blackouts we recently had in Adelaide - look how much that crippled people? The following days, we practically sold out of lanterns and lights. Supermarkets sold out of batteries and candles. It shows how underprepared people are even for small weather events. What are the 'take homes' we should be considerate of?

When I was growing up in the '80's I had a mate at school who's dad was a bit of a hippy. He was sure we were all going to be killed in a nuclear war, so bought a scrub block at Upper Landsdown and started building a fall out shelter. It was multi tasking as he did need the dirt for mud bricks for the house, but he also had a sizeable bunker when it was finished.
It is a good outlook to indoctrinate your kids with though. "Come on son, lets dig this bunker together as there is no future and everyone is going to die" to a 12 year old kid.... no wonder he became a lawyer ;D.

I'm not sure how successful it would have been though. Fall out and bush fires would have killed his permaculture garden and the preserved food and bottled water would only last so long. I think I'd rather go up in the fireball than slowly starve with radiation sickness :-[.

With everything being bar-coded and scanned these days, the supermarkets don't actually hold anywhere as much stock as they used to. A lot of the shelf packers job of an evening is to 'dress the shelves', where all they do is stack stuff at the front of the shelf to make them look fully stocked.

They rely on central warehousing and suppliers are expected to hold stock, which is great when the supply chain is working.

I lived in Brassall (Ipswich Qld) in 2011 when we had big floods. Our road that ran to the supermarket was under 10m of water, the supermarket also lost power, so after 3-4 days when no one could get in there the freezers were a bit manky. That place shut up shop and didn't open for 6 months (then struggled for another 2 years before going broke).

For us it was 3 days of inconvenience because of my wifes coffee addiction she ran out of fresh milk after 2 days. I have the dual burner stove, multiple car fridges/batteries etc. what was in the cupboard and the camping boxes, so cooking and washing wasn't a problem. The cat ran out of biccies though.

The people in Moggil on the other hand.... They were cut off for a week and lost power on day 1, so those that were set up for camping were well ahead. They had helicopters flying supplies across the river and people were elbowing each other in the throat over a loaf of bread!

The preppers that made me laugh are the ones that stock the house in the city with 16 ton of food, then plan to bug out. How many tins of tomatoes can you fit in a day pack?

Personally, I think it is better to invest your time and energy in forming a cohesive society, rather that withdrawing from it with a plan of cutting it away the first time things go pear shaped. Isn't that the whole idea behind a community?
