At a crossroad for car replacement

Hey all,

Looking at getting rid of my landcruiser HZJ105 Standard bus only as I have had it for 9 years and have only 146 000kms on it.

Now looking at 2 choices
First being a HDJ100 GXL with all the fruit you can imagine and then some. It has 200 000ks on it, so just run in, extremely well looked after. Also would be keeping camper

Second being an Iveco Daily 4x4 dual cab, for which I need to save another 15k to get and I would also be getting a lift off camper custom built for the tray and selling the camper trailer

Now not looking at money what are your opinion to this?
Need to get the backside into gear and get out camping

Wow, two very different options.

A 100 series with camper or an Iveco with lift off.

Bit hard to compare.  But both would be great setups.

Either way chances are not as my grandmother is loosing her car and license and am looking at buying it (she is 95)

Iveco! Just be wary that they have less braking capacity than a skateboard

Eventual resale is something that has to be factored in. I imagine the used market for Iveco's is very very small, especially compared to the 100 series market.

I disagree with that. Not the part about the reletive number of subsequent potential buyers but the bit about eventual resale being something that has to be factored in. There is a lot to be said for buying/modifying to exactly what you want and being supremely happy with it over compromising because of some percieved value 9 years down the track.

If i was in this situation the notion of reselling would be very low on my list of considerations.

I think one of the big variables is how you plan to use it, touring gray nomad style I think the Iveco would be better but for more "just going camping" I'd go with the car trailer combo. Another big variable is how much it, how much will it be used camping vs normal use. I would assume the Landcruiser would be better for normal driving, Probably more fuel efficient but the Iveco might be handy for you as a ute/truck depending on what you do. I think it comes down to use as to what would be better and only you really know that.

I disagree with you. Where did I say it was at the front of considerations? Maybe you misread my post - it is "a" factor for all car purchases. It is not a leading factor, but it should be considered.

And it is not just "perceived" value - a 100 will be far easier, quicker and less of a hassle to sell than an Iveco. Many people don't have the time or knowledge to deal with such a vehicle when it comes to get rid of it. And if a vehicle has the very limited buyers an Iveco would attract versus the many times more buyers who would consider a 100, the 100 is likely to get a much better price - not guaranteed, but much more likely.

Yep and the transfercase, breathers, poor knowledge by Iveco do you want me to go on.

Brakes easy fix BHSS do a conversion, tranny needs a cooler, breathers in a poor location, seat height needs reducing 50mm.

These and purchase price I am budgeting $1.20  for

I also never disagreed with all the stuff about the potential resale of the respective vehicles and said as much.

And just for the record, when i bought my current 105, resale was categorically not a factor in my decision. What does that say about the statement

For some random reason I've seen 3 really good looking Ivecos in the last 2 days (big muddies, snorkel, etc).
Now I can't get them out of my mind. :) What an awesome base to build a camper off!!!

I'm pretty sure I saw 1000 cruisers in the last 2 hours. Can't say for sure, didn't really notice, but there was some bland old things that all looked the same. I guess they where cruisers?????

Given the choice I know which one I would be getting. ;)

We've just become Iveco daily dealers at work, we have a twin cab 4X4 sitting in th years and I have had a good look over it, it does look like a good bit of gear.

I don't think you can really compare the Iveco to a cruiser, ones a truck and needs to be driven like one and the service/maintenance costs will also be much higher on the Iveco.

Matt, I was at one stage looking at a mog and as the Iveco would be registered at 4.5t I can compare , some may not. I cannot justify buying a ute that cannot safely carry more than 1t without major modification hence a wagon or the Iveco. ALso I have seen "going bush"  and his cracked cross member but he must drive the ute hard to do that

We've started trying the Iveco's at work. Our depot gets one next year, but we got a good look over the demo when it came through. It looks a good bit of gear, although those big muddies it had on alone looked like they were worth more than my Triton

says you're not alone in that thinking......I don't think resale has ever been something i've given much / any consideration to when i've bought a vehicle....i buy what i want because i want it, not because of what it might be worth whenever down the track.

 tranny needs a cooler             transfercase, also synthetic oil

 seat height needs reducing 50mm.        depends what seets it has in it, done mine in 2 hrs
