From my underastanding most hire units have a simple brake controller mounted on the trailer, might be an option to look into as it would then open up a lot more possibilities for buying. As I mentioned earlier there seem to be alot of posts i've read of people going down the light camper option to avoid brakes only to have to retrofit them later so make sure you double check everything (some of the weight you quoted seem rather optimistic) and then allow a decent margin for things you have overlooked. I personally would be more concerned about the safety aspect than the legality if you are approaching the weight limit and go for a braked option if I were getting close.

How about this one, seems to tick the box's and has the brake controller on the trailer already.

It's aluminum so should be reasonably light and comes in within budget before bargaining, would be even cheaper without the boat.

Brake controller on the trailer is legal in QLD for some trailers, but not in NSW... one of the reasons I didn't go for Jeepers' trailer.

I did see, but it's one of those "if someone else searches for a similar topic, lets include as much info as possible" moments.

Ok, Break-away BRAKES.
The brake unit is in the trailer. Trailer is fitted with electric Brakes.
Operates as a pendulum type controller with power from the trailer batteries.
There is also a contact switch on the draw bar.  An insulating plug keeps the contacts apart.
The insulating plug is tethered to the tow vehicle when the trailer is hitched up.
If the trailer gets away from  the tow vehicle the plug is pulled and the Brakes are applied on the trailer.
Had a system on a work trailer for a long time, it never needed a unit in the tow vehicle.
Could have been a TEKONSHA I think.  Trailer was 2tonne as well.
The control unit wasn't much different in size to a M/cycle battery, if I remember right.
The unit was mounted inside the trailer, out of the weather.

great idea to have the brake controller onto trailer. will definitely investigate it further. can you mount any of them on the trailer or do they need to be a specific external one.
Apart from the external ones, if i were to install one in the car what brand do you recommend or are they pretty much the same.
I quizzed audi, and was told it s not a genuim audi part, but a redarc. any thoughts...?

Good to hear that people have inpected trailers on behalf of other. I would hate to annoy somebody and asking them to check it out for me.. but it does tick all the boxes.. :D

I hear you in terms of my custom built as it may not be someones else idea. There are so many good campers at different price points that it makes it hard to stick to one type, i.e.: i love the lifestyle walk thru, but they are at the upper range of the budget and they seem a bit heavy. then there s the like of very simple and light such as vacation, some custom line and track about, but at only a couple of thousands less than the big fully set up lifestyle, it makes it hard to decide.
No bells and whistles, light to tow vs big, heavy but fully geared at only a couple of thousands more if that...

anybody want to share their mistakes when first investing into a camper by any chance..I have an image of my set up in my head, but you guys all come up with great counter arguments. very thankful to you to point out the things that i believe are small but when looking into it appear bigger issues at later stages and usually more expansive down the track.

Seriously thank you all for your inputs, i really appreciate it. I hate throwing money out the window but one the same token hate settling for something then realising that i should have gone for the bigger and better...
regards

I like Autoelec.com.au (they also have an ebay store that is cheaper when there's a code on the go...)
They have a few different brake controllers:
Trailer Mounted ones: $89 or another one for $89, or $170 for a Redarc one
Redarc Towpro ACCV2 $220ish

Hope that helps

You seem pretty keen but maybe finding it hard to imagine what a camper will look/feel like both in use and towing.

I was afforded by another swagger a chance for my wife & I to come and have a look at his camper and set it up and pack it down with him.   Was invaluable in knowing if it was right for us to buy a camper in the first place and determine how we would go towing it.

We had a Forester at the time so we had the same dilemma you are going through with weight.  On paper the Lifestyle Walkthrough looked great.  We even went to Slacks Creek with the aim of buying one and just wanted to 'check it out first'.   When seeing it in the flesh my first thought was there was no way I could attach it to the little Sooby and be confident as they were huge.   This was at the time they were going out of the Explorer models which were more suitable but none available.   Then off to Customline but they seemed to focus on the 12ft tent and or the Walkthrough models.   We were keen on the 9ft tent and normal sized trailer by then and also worked out we didn't really have enough room to store the walkthrough models in any case.   Hence looking further afield and picked up out Vacation camper second hand.

So - take it or leave it - I'm happy to pay it forward by offering the same.   We're in Forest Lake - just Pm me and we can arrange for you to come over and check it out in the next week or so.   And here's the catch.  There is none.   It's not for sale - I love it too much.   It's a Vacationer vs the Tourer but you will get the idea.

Break away brakes are required on any trailer over two tonnes and is powered by its own dedicated battery, not very big.  In NSW, there must be a battery monitor in the cab visible by the driver.

Now do not confuse "break away brakes" with electric trailer brakes which work in conjunction with the vehicle's brakes and are used to slow/stop the trailer.  Two very different systems.

You could always arrange others to inspect for you.. been done plenty of times on here.
Many bargain trailers are had interstate.

For that amount of $ if I were in the market for one, I'd buy it sight unseen. Road trip for the weekend and if it's not what I expected/envisaged/wanted/liked/needed or if it smelt odd, I'd flick it in Brisbane for an extra grand and still have beer money left over after the cost of the road trip.

???

With enough horse power, sheer ignorance and a total lack of respect for your vehicle, you'll get through....
