I've got an old Sideplate Grey motor here for a rebuild

Oh man, i'd forgotten how fragile these old Holden engines were/are.
The flywheel in held on by 4 bolts and a dowel.

This old thing wont know itself over the coming months.
The plan, is to bore it out a little and bung 6 new jam tins in it.
We'll slip a mild lumpy bump stick in it.
The head will score a full set of 186 red valves.
The head will cop a shave and a haircut and some porting to give us some compression and to let it breathe.
We have a Monaro Motors, twin carb manifold from waaaaaay back in the 60's.
A decent set of extractors is a given.
We'll drop some weight off the flywheel to allow it to rev a bit crisper.

She'll be no fire breathing thing, but should go ok and rev to 6,000.

Hope your going to ad an extra couple of beefier dowel pins to that crank / flywheel Kev, A close fitting Bissaloy steel scatter shield around the bell  housing might be another good idea too .  ;D

Over 20 years of HQ racing in every state of Australia with a model that was only built for 3 years.
One would expect there’s not many road going specimens left now. Well perhaps more specifically, there’d be not many with diffs and gearboxes left by now.... ;)

I dropped the rods out this today.
Stuff me, for an engine that was locked up, its in good condition.
Not one broken ring amongst the lot. Plenty stuck in the grooves, but none busted.
Big end bearing could go back in if it was a budget (IE; No money) build.
a whole 4 main bearings for the crank.

Overall, looking VERY rebuildable.

It sat for 10 years in Charlie's back yard. I would suggest, its had a tiny bit of water get into it.
Not much, that's for sure, but it doesn't take much either.

We got it to spin on the starter after "treating the engine".

This engine was rebuilt (we have the receipt) back in 1978 and while its done some work, it hasn't done too much.
Very little sludge inside.... these things didn't run an oil filter, it was only available as an option.
