Upcoming military auctions - trailers, landrovers, unimog etc
« on: October 07, 2016, 02:27:33 PM »
Heads up for those on here  interested in military trailers.

Some auctions coming up in Brisbane, Townsville, Adelaide, Perth & Minto NSW

Not a lot of stuff this time around, but a few No.5 1/2 ton  trailers (first photo below), Haulmark PT1-1.2 750kg trailers (second photo below), landies, even a unimog for creating that ultimate off-road tourer.
Also Haulmark PT2-2 dual axle beasties for those that take way too much stuff.... (third photo)

One of the auctions auctions off a golf-cart as military surplus  ???

Not in army camo, so I'll give that one a pass.

If you do a google search on the trailer name eg Haulmark PT2, it brings up previous Grays auctions showing final bid price. From memory the PT2s went between $3k and $ 4 k.

Saw a private unimog running around this morning. What an off-road weapon that would be. Imagine how stuck you'd have to get it to be needing that rear winch :)
One day when I am rich I will get one.....  :(  (he says with a sense of despair and futility.....)

Saw one last week set up with a massive camper body on the back. Looked really impressive. Definitely more what you'd class as an expedition vehicle though rather than a tourer. Damn thing looked like it was ready to climb Everest or push new roads through the Amazon or something.

Bidding is underway. 5 days to go

Every lot has pictures now & current bid prices.
I put a bid on a couple of trailers, but someone has autobid set up...might bide my time. Surely they don't want all of them?

You do not need to win the lotto.
The army ones are being sold for round the $35k mark and they are fully service with full maintenance records.
The running cost is just high, but you will not use it as a daily drive.

Those  single axle trailers had a habit of rolling over very easily  if pushed a little hard.  Even behind a Series 2 Land Rover. They were not suppose to with those hitches but they did.

Love the look of the 4 T Haulmark trailers, but I think you probably need one of the Unimogs to tow it, and I can't afford one of those.

Nevermind, I have just bid on one of the fire trucks, just for the look on my wifes face when I turn up with another pointless toy....  ;D

l followed a 1800 Mog up the Cape earlier this year . Bumped him as he progressed up the OTL , by the time he got to loyalty Beach he was really banged up . The tracks had been cut by uncaring Tojo & Patrol drivers , not quit wide enough for a Mog . Well  at 1st .
Stick with what you gots & dreams abouts the rest  .

We had one accompany us on a recent trip. Whilst the Prado's, Paj's, Landcruisers were all tanking along Binns Track /Finke river at 60-80km/h they were sitting at 40-60 because they can't slow down quick enough on the twisty tracks.   It was happily running at 80-90 on the Oodnatta Track though - helped by in cab the tire inflation / deflation system.

Just be aware the ex-Army mogs are limited to 80km/h.

To land a brand new Mog in Australia, expect to pay $200k+  :)

Fairly sure easy fix as either 'Unidan Engineering' or Unimog Central' advised of one of these sitting at the states max speed limit all the way from Melbourne to Queensland after limiter removed hills included.

Also spoke to a ADF personal who followed a rally car quite a few years back who the mechanics had 'supped up' to keep up and went well over the ton!

That must be a relatively late mod, as the ones I was using in 90's weren't limited  ???

"Interesting" set-up with the forward / reverse arrangement for the gears as well. Saw one of our drivers showing off one day with a close as possible racing start & had it up to 80k in top gear in reverse before he ran out of road & had to stop!  >:D

Convoy speed would often be 80, but that was so vehicles at the back could catch up, although there would be one clapped out old unit along that would struggle to crack 90.

I downloaded the user manuals and repair and overhaul manuals (all from Frontline Machinery), and yes, I have no life :'(.
On the injection pump there is a governor. "The governor limits the idle and maximum engine speeds to 700 rpm and 2 800 rpm respectively."
So, if you had the gear ratios and tyre diameter, then you could work it out. But with only 124kW at 2800rpm, then I don't think it would give you much over a ton.

8 forward and 8 reverse  :)

Mogs can be electronically limited and/or limited by gearing. You can adjust the gearing to get the old 404's from the 1950's up to over 110km/h.
The Australian army ones are 435's (aka U1700's) which can be anywhere between 80 and 110 km/h depending on the governor,  gear box, portal axle ratios and tire sizes. The RAAF ones are governed to 2600rpm, the Army to 2800rpm.

If you've want more than 90kph, you'll need an axle swap to the 'fast axles' but at a loss of lower ratios.
Top Speed 12.5x20 tires= 85 kph
Top Speed 14.5x20 tires= 90 kph
Top Speed 14.5x20 +fast axles= 110 kph
The standard axle ratio for the U1700  is 6.4:1. With the optional high speed ring and pinion the ratio is 5.4:1 for the U1700.

The newer civilian 5000 series are electronically limited to 96km/h and the 5023's to 90km/h.

They are primarily an off road implement carrier/tractor so top speed isn't as important. If you want a rock crawler you can get auxillary under gearboxes that bolt on and give you the following in forward and reverse...
-3.19:1 for a crawl ratio of approx. 271:1
-5.76:1 for a crawl ratio of approx 490:1
-55.87:1 for a crawl ratio of approx. 4750:1

This is an older mog in super crawl = 1 foot a minute at 1500rpm in first gear

Had a look on Saturday and you will need to buy a new lift for the Unimog. My standar cruiser will not reach it at full extend!
And those dual axle trailers have independent suspension which was a surprise to me.

Anyway, can some one please explain to me what he Brown Slip NSW means?
Can you drive it to another state and is it roadworthy?

Any trailer with an ATM of 2000Kg now require a BROWN slip from a heavy vehicle inspection station.
... it's at any HVAIS-certified inspector (heavy vehicle authorised inspection station).
