The rear side profile reminds me of one of those older Sannyong people movers. My D1 is getting better looking each day!

I love the laziness of this feature:

"Advanced Tow Assist allows you to control the direction of your trailer when reversing by using the rotary Terrain Response 2 controller. The optional system will control the vehicle's steering to achieve the desired trailer trajectory. The Touchscreen will display the current and desired trailer trajectory."

So you can steer the trailer in reverse, by turning the joystick rather than needing to have any skill.....

That's a FANTASTIC feature. Many people have ZERO interest or need to reverse a trailer much at all. If a person only tows rarely this reduces the stress and/or possible danger involved with a task they may feel uncomfortable with.

A great selling feature to people who don't tow much.

IMO......if people need this, and/or park assist, they shouldn't be driving or towing.

I don't disagree, but its a great selling feature. Many will buy it for that reason alone.

Brilliant till it ****s up and they are stuck and cant do Shit...

... it shouldn't be a feature. People should learn how to drive.. be taught more than how to pass their lessons.
How the **** is reverse assist etc going to make better drivers ???

Once again I don't disagree. I reckon there should be a towing licence required (above a certain weight).

Take it a step further:
Self-drive cars are here right now. It is the way of the future, for some people. That's way beyond a reverse parking feature.

With the way some people with licences drive, I would be extremely happy for them to have a robot-driven car.

I do wonder how it will go, especially as the entry level versions will only have the 2L Ingenium Diesel which puts out 430/500Nm of torque depending on which version you get.  When compared to the current engine which is 600+, I know this is a much lighter car but it doesn't sound like much?

If you can buy them......

I have had my D4 for two years and ARB only released the bar to fit the current face is a couple of weeks ago - mine was one of the first to get it fitted (or more correctly would have had it fitted if they hadn't bolloxed them up and produced a bar that wouldn't fit......)

I have a habit of looking at Disco's but never buying.

Back in 2009 I was originally looking for a late model D2 but in the end decided that for fractionally more money I'd rather have a brand new diesel JK Wrangler, and that served me very well.

Was looking for the JK's replacement a few months ago and looked at the D4 but to be honest was underwhelmed when I sat in it (the base model which is all I would be able to afford). Some elements in it actually felt flimsy & cheap which surprised me and it felt somehow smaller than I expected. In the end I decided the 200 Series suited my needs better despite Toyota's shall we say "conservative" approach to the way they spec their vehicles and not so conservative pricing.

Looking at the new Disco I'm not seeing anything that makes me regret my decision. It does look like a Territory, which looked good a decade ago but is looking a bit dated now. Definitely a backwards step in terms of styling but I guess that's what happens when they start chasing fuel economy figures.

As for the tech, I agree with what most others say here. Some tech is without doubt a good thing and makes cars (especially those pushing 3T) safer.......ABS, airbags, traction control. Others over time just have the the effect of reducing driver's basic skills, like self parking. If you can't park, which is an easily controllable manoeuvre at slow speed, then you should't be allowed to drive a car at any speed. That new reversing idea is another case of this, and to my mind also potentially dangerous. Instead if using your windows and mirrors to see where you are going and what is around you as you normally would when reversing a trailer, you will instead have all you're attention focus down in the centre of the console. It'll be a lot more difficult to monitor your surroundings while reversing using that.

Isnt that where some would have us go?

No, of course not. They just want us to go back to where their level of driving skill alows them to feel competent but anyone who comes along later could not. For me, if i were like that, it would be when you had to pump the go peddle in the morning or the thing wouldnt start. You had to man handle the wheel around putting muscles in your Shit coz you ran 305s and a 13" SAAS wheel with no power assist. When your brakes didn't and even when they did they dragged you left or right. When checking the oil, brake fluid, coolant and even tyre pressure was a weekly thing even in a new car. And when we all thought bigger was safer and crumple rate was how fast you could cleen up on Chrstmas morning.

But i distinctly remember my uncle saying, when he saw my dads new VB Commodore. Those retractable seatbelts will get you killed!

Driving a car is a dying skill just. Itll be just dialing a phone. :-[

Not really Joff, but I do see your point.
I'd prefer people develop the skills, than have technology mask the lack thereof.
Parking and reversing are basics, just like driving forward. Anyone can learn.

A few points:
In the UK you do need a special licence to tow a combined mass over 3500 kg. Wait until they try that here...

The new Disco 5 is not a straight replacement for the old one. It's aimed more at the Q7, X5, XC90 crowd. The specs on the Land Rover Australia site may change but if they don't then this car will not be bought by people who want to tow a van.

For a start, it is no longer has proper 4WD. You can spec it with a low range transfer box if you wish but it does not come with one as standard. Let me repeat that: you can buy a LR Discovery that DOES NOT HAVE LOW RANGE. Now this is not being done in the same vein as VW do with the auto Amarok. It is because LR do not expect people to take this car off the tarmac.

Secondly, the tow ball mass is only 200 kg. As I said above that may change by the time the car goes on sale in Aus in the same way the last Toureg changed its ball weight over night from 150 kg to 350 kg. However the LR site also states that the maximun towing mass drops from 3500 kg to 2500 kg if you want 7 seats and Aero wheels with low rolling resistance tyres.

I've heard that the new Defender is the go to vehicle if you want a LR competitor to the Land cruiser for towing and going off road. You could still spec up a Disco for proper off road and towing but unless they change the tow ball spec you will be stuck at 200 kg on the ball.

I suppose it will be OK if the Defender addresses all of that and doesn't come with bloody 20" wheels!
