mdc explorer rear fold hard floor

Just noticed mdc explorer hard floor on there web site 11990 , Have been thinking about budget hard floor
, Looks like good value , what does everyone think

My experience with MDC so far is I couldn't fault them. Yes had a few teething problems but after hours, business hours and problem solving has been 10/10.

The Melbourne base crew are on the ball and genuinely good blokes.

Campers are just being loaded up with stuff, welds seem ok (No angle grinding) and think if you are buying, buy now! Once his marketing ploy is over, things will go up. He won the 2016 award for under $20,000 and I know I brought at the right time IMHO

Just went to Cleveland camping show wanted to see the  mdc explorer rear fold was not setup , but I was told no storage under bed asked 2 or 3 times
found that a bit strange Went home had a look at web photos and there are a couple of storage draws ,Sale rep no idea or photos not explorer hard floor.
 Modcon Quattro looks very good and they no there product

Camped next to a brand new one in January. The owner (a young single supporting mum) was quite competent but was still learning. I helped with a couple of things but I was quite impressed with the set and all the extras she had.

Was at the recent 4wd camping fishing show in Melbourne and as all that were there know it rained a fair bit. The MDC hard floor mattress was wet and I could see a few leaks around the windows.
Spoke to a guy in Lyndhurst this winter and he was raving about how good it was, he only had it break one trailing arm on the strezleki track which was apparently O.K as he could jerry rig it back till he got somewhere with a welder.
He also thought the dust seals were great because he didn't mind cleaning dust out of his C.T everyday and whilst the canopy winch didn't work properly when he bought it that was O.K too because he took it to a fabricator and they fixed it for only $250. He also didn't mind destroying the stub axle in the first few hundred Kms because someone forgot to grease the bearings when they put it together.
He spent about 10 minutes telling me how great it was. The wife and I were looking at each other trying to work out if he was sarcastic or serious and we believe he's serious.
That precise conversation convinced me to dig deeper into my pocket and go Aussie made.
But then again we go remote and we go solo, some people just want it to tow down to Rosebud for summer or maybe to Merrimbula for a week and don't need anything more.
As always each to their own.

Interesting comment about Aussie made - we feel the same as you. I want something that works and will pay for that. I don't have the energy or patience to stuff around. A friend is about to buy a MDC hard floor. I would pass this advice on but he would not listen but it proves my point. If they don't grease bearings what else is wrong......

Sorry for bringing up an old topic, but does anyone own a MDC Explorer (rear fold or forward fold)?

They are a bloody good price and MDC quality has looked to improve in the last 12 months.

Only thing the Explorer is missing really is the ability to trickle charge the battery at home when in storage. I'm sure tjis is an optional extra though??

Went to the Cairns camping 4wd show last Saturday. MDC are still a clear winner over the other hardfloor imports. Friends were looking at the $20k one, can't remember the model name. Paint and finish well above other imports.  Have a close look at ect as such as electrical system, wiring, extras like solar panels, HWS and the like that other brands don't provide.  I had a few rows with the MDC rep on this forum a few years ago but they have certainly come a long way since then.

Thanks Muzza. The 20K ones are the Cruiser Slide, Cruiser Highside and Venturer Cape York (the Venturer won camper trailer of the year last year in one of the big magazines).

I don't want to quite stretch the budget that far hence why I am looking at the Explorer and maybe the Jackson...have made my mind on the Forward Fold now. Through some research I found out you can add a DCDC charger and 240v system for around $1300 I think it was.

Also, those big bl00dy boat racks that are appearing on campers these days...are they specifically for boats or can they be used for kayaks also? Can I put the kayak on top without the boat rack? Just seems like an added weight to me when I may not need it.

You don't need a boat rack for a kayak, but if you have a boat rack you don't need to take off the kayak every time you stop - just flip it out of the way. We use the rack for firewood and other gear as well. Certainly not JUST a boat rack, but if you don't need it, it is indeed just dead weight.
$1300 for DC and 240V seems like pretty good pricing if it's all wired in and ready to go. The short cut method would be to just wire in a domestic battery charger and plug it into a lead at home.

can't say I have ever taken any notice of any of those types of awards myself.....I prefer to research, inspect and test drive stuff myself to form my own opinion of what it's like, rather then take some random persons opinion of it. Granted those people likely have a background in the products being tested, but everyone has different needs and wants, so their opinions don't count for to much in my life.

For what its worth I agree regarding the awards. But MDC do appear to have significantly improved and you get a lot of bang for your buck. As we will only be doing black top and thr odd gravel road, I think it will suit me well.

Bring on the Brisbane show...hopefully they have some good deals.

  I don't know if I'm just being cynical but it seems as though the number of awards won relates directly to the amount of advertising certain brands do in certain magazines
