What to do for half century of life

I turn the big 50 in 2 years and my child bride follows the year after. We have been tossing around ideas for a celebration and have a few but I know there are plenty of older farts on here so maybe someone has some cool ideas we haven't thought of.

We are looking at probably taking 5 or 6 weeks for OS travel. Something interesting and not touristy. We don't do touristy so well so no Hawaii 50, Vegas, Thai resort or Bali stuff. And it wont be an organised thing like a bus tour or flying in and out of major centers living in big hotels out of suitcases.

More like a South American adventure or hiring a bike in the Europe or the US (A nice bike, not a harley). African Safari (not on a bike), Northern Europe/UK in a motorhome again or even SE Asia - Vietnam/Cambodia.

We could do more Aussie stuff but we do that, and have done that most years for the last 20 so OS is more likely.

What have you done or have dreamt about doing along these line?? or what other ideas you got?? you only turn 50 once  8)

I've travelled and driven a bit in the US. A US road trip either two, four or more wheels all would be good joff. Utah head sth pick up Route 66 and across.

we just got back from the states, and went to Yosemite National Park. My comment to my wife after being there was i would love to put our camper on a boat, buy a new 4wd over there and cruise all the off the beaten tracks of the USA.

We have some great looking places in australia but we dont have a Yosemite Valley and it just blow me away, and that was just going to the tourist area. i could imagine there would be better spots to go.

We're seriously looking at the Dr. Livingstone tour for 2017 or '18. My GP is Sth African & when we showed him the itinerary, he is thinking of coming along.

Agreed!
Yosemite is the closest to a spiritual place (if such thing exists), I have experienced.
Go to the States but be prepared to open the wallet!

You trying to make me feel old??

I'm on that site and constantly marvel at the intrepid adventures of those people. I wish I was half as adventurous.

One thing I don't do is tour 2up over snotty dirt, or worse, anymore. Any bike tour we do will be strictly tar and short stints of good dirt if necessary  :'(

I might do a quick solo cross continent trip next year though. Central road and Plenty Hwy.

Quick calc says AU$11k each. Might be a bit exxy for us. We spent less than that for all four of us (2 young adults - 15 and 18) to travel Europe in a small motor home for 4 weeks in 2013.

How about the trans Siberia express from Beijing via Mongolia then a long boat travel through the canals of your country of choice.  Add some motorcycle hire to fill in the gaps.

Friend of mine has rented a big place in the south of France for her 70th in 2017 for 2 months and has invited all of her friends to come over and join her for a couple of weeks at a time. Constant stream of parties I think.

Some friends of mine walked the Camino de Santiago in Spain. You stay in pensions each night, drinking local red wine, and walk during the day carrying just a minimal pack.   Don't need to be religious to do it. 

I had some other friends who climbed Kilimanjaro. Something that pushes you out of your comfort zone like that could be really memorable.

Firstly, I reckon you should start making plans for the second 50. I would agree with comments regarding Yosemite. It was the biggest Wow moment of my life. Some might think that that means I haven't lived but that's another story.

My two cents worth would be maybe a trek in Nepal, (the Annapurna circuit) or hire a barge on the continent and go where you choose. A bit like a camper trailer on water. Take some bikes with you and you can pull up wherever you want and check out the sites along the way.

Whatever you choose it should be a great time.

Just outside town is a place called Alabama Hills where they filmed a lot of westerns and a bit further out is a mountain called Mount Whitney and you can drive most of the way to the top ( called Whitneys portal, 12,000ft tall ) and after seeing this breath taking white granite mountain peak, Yosemite lost a bit of it's wonder.
We now urge anyone to try and see both.

Last year the dollar was still over 94c so cost of things was still good.

Loved both Yosemite and Death Valley, but my favourite was Monument Valley.

We went in January and would recommend a winter trip as all these places looked amazing with snow.  You can see nothing like these in australia and the snow makes it more so.

Do you know any one in the states that could buy a Could  buy a  motor home RV  in California for you and some others ? .
My old boss did similar a number of years back , formed  a syndicate with  3 other couples[ drawn up in a contract etc ] , each did a minimum of 10 weeks or a maximum of 20 weeks consecutively, slush fund for break downs etc.. each couple picked up and dropped of the next at Los Angeles  airport on change over .. then they sold the rig at the end of it .
They roamed virtualy every corner of the States, including into Mexico and Canada over their 20 week stint .
