Mickys are the worth it
« on: August 08, 2016, 03:08:42 PM »
So now after deciding to reshoe the pack horse for the big trip getting prices.  Are Micky Thompson STZ's worth the extra $300 a set?

245/75 - R16 Micky STZ $289 each

245/75 - R16 Bridgestone AT 697 $225 each

^ What he said.
I am running MT ATZs and I love them.
My car is mainly used for off road trips and camping, not as a daily drive.

they are if its a dedicated off-roader or at least every weekend.

I rate the MT's highly.

But for a daily, to much tyre. Can get something just as good on the road for much less.

dedicated offroader???? the STZ is softer than a road tyre... 90% road 10% carparks

It was a generalisation.

The STZ's are an awsome tyre, but the Goodyears are just as good.

My 100 series got over 100K on ATZ's and rate them very highly. However the Hankook Dynapro RF10's I replaced them with are fantastic and great bang for your buck. I did a lot of research before I got them and I'm glad I did.

Im running 697s and love them. Quiet, good on and off road, minimal tear outs. I had the older 694s on last tug and they were great too.
Need to be sure you get something for the extra $.
Ive had no MT tyres so cant compare.

Cheers Glen

Everyone's idea of a good tyre depends on the type of driving they do and what they're used for.
Currently I have MT ATZ and they're a good allround tyre. Prior to them I had the factory 693s - personally I thought they were rubbish.
I also currently have Bridgestone 697 on the Dmax. Ok tyre, does the trick for mostly on road driving that the dmax does but I when I do have to use 4wd when I am off-road I find they're pretty ordinary as far as grip goes.

I have a set of STZ's on the cruiser. They have done 60000 and still have heaps of meat on them. We have been to the cape and done a lot of sand driving with them. Only once I would have needed a chunkier tyre but winched out ok. Atleast there is no drone road noise with these tyres and they are coping with everything I throw at them anyway.
Been down to 10psi with them and they were fine.
Great all round tyre IMO.

Loved my MT's

Went with Kuhmo KL61's this time around because I wasn't doing enough to justify the price of them.

The kuhmo's are great but will not be as good off road.

I had both and I prefer MT.
Way better in lasting longer. less chipping and missing lugs.

I'm currently running my first set of Mickey Thommos and have been impressed as its also my first set of AT's...
I've always had MT's or better :)

But with only a few 1000klms on the ATZ's - they'd wanna be good  ;D.. I don't think anyone can give a real good report on tyres unless they have done 5000klms +... all tyres are good when new.

For what you want I'd say the Stones might just do the job well.

Ive done 45,000+ kms on my MT ATZ P3s, including a lap of Oz including Savannah, Gibb, Steep point, Flinders, Robe etc. Ive never had a flat tyre and are wearing well. Adjusting tyre pressures is a contributing factor.

I have travelled more than 120k klm's. on ST Maxx's, mostly bitumen, some S.A. outback, including William Ck. and Mt. Dare, Boulia, Birdsville, Broken Hill, Mildura and back home.

Adjusting tyre pressures is a contributing factor.
Regards
Angus

Totally agree, some need a higher pressure than others, but you have to work it out to get good results.

Have had three sets of MIckey T's they are a Brilliant tyre, never had a problem!!
Running Toyo MT's now and must admit I'm very impressed. Just read the fineprint on your Cooper warranty and make sure you are comfortable with all their "outs" way too much wriggle room for them in my opinion.

Cheers
