UHF Radio Transmission Problem

My old Uniden 40ch in the 'tilly has started to play up. It still receives perfectly (I can pick up conversations of blokes doodling around Mt. Mee in their fourbies) but will only transmit up to about 30 metres. The "TX" screen symbol still appears so the mic would appear to be working ok. I've tested it with the Landies UHF & a couple of hand helds we have, with same results.

This happened to mine a few years ago. A small part called a filter needed to be replaced. I think all up it cost $60 for remove replace UHF, des older and resolver in new filter and retune the radio.

My transmission was similar at 30 meters. I thought my receiving was ok but I could only hear others that were using a repeater or emergency services that transmit at 25watts.

similar thing to both happened to my GME on 25watts. sent away 100 later it was fixed.

Hmmm. I might just part with some spondulicks & get a new unit

Check your coax/antenna for damage, failing that it could be the output stage on your radio is shagged

I'd just replace it with one of the newer 80 Channel units and be done with it.
You can get them so small now.
Either a remote head or everything on the Microphone.
Your choice.
Cost toooo much to repair nowadays.
You could buy two or three radios for the cost of repairs.

Best thing to do would be take your tilly to a communications shop so they could sweep the antenna first and make sure it's not the problem( shouldn't cost you anything and hate to buy a new radio and find out the antenna was the issue). If its the radio that's the issue then being an old uniden it could quite possible be just a tunning potentiometer that needs calibration. If you decide to get yourself a new radio I would recommend icom as a really good unit.... I do radio repairs and hardly ever see icoms back for repair.

Thanks for the advice. I'll look into it. As to Icom, I have one in the Landy & have used the IC40 hand held for work along with several other brands & the Icom are so much sturdier, reliable & longevity leaves the others behind. In the '70's we were using 12v Onkyos for work & they were remarkable. I was sitting up on the east peak of Mt Barney in S.E. Qld & talking to a woman in Florida.
