New Tyres - D40
« on: July 18, 2016, 12:30:10 PM »
Hi All.

I will be replacing my current BFG KM2's on my D40 soon. I have been looking at Mickey Thompson's ATZ or the Deegan 38. Any feed back on these two or others would be great. Usually doing 50/50 on & off road.
Cheers..... Steve

Gave my new ATZ P3's a run up the snow on the weekend. and I'll be honest, I had almost talked myself out of them being any good before I even hit the dirt.
This is my first set of AT's after dozen or so sets of muddys over the years... BFG, Kumho, Goodyear, Simex, etc..

On the road, I've only got few hundred klms on them, but they have been good so far.

Wet Roads - they are great, and give good feedback...

Hardpacked dirt - Seemed good.. no issues there

On loose dirt roads they were controllable when you wanted to play in a corner, and stable enough when you didn't.
Slop - Down at Comet Flat in the mud, they didn't spin up when taking off in the slop unless you wanted them to.

On the powered snow they were good, but sometimes I thought I'd have done that easier with a muddy. maybe.. maybe not.
On the ice - it didn't really matter

The only time I winched was a section of Barkly where there was a tree down across track, and partly buried by snow, and I lost momentum and that was that.

There was another dude there with a set on a 100 series, also only week old and he seemed to have more issues than I did...

Jury is still out, as that was first time out, but they seem a pretty good thing so far.

I've had the BFG's AT's on my previous 4by but either through incorrect compound mix or not lowering my tyre pressures enough, lost big chunks of rubber in what I would consider standard Vic High Country touring.

Since then (18months ago) I've had a set of Maxxis AT984's and religiously rotated them every 5,000km's. Same type of touring in VHC and Flinders Ranges and now just over 50,000km's and they're in great nick still. Some battle scars, but no punctures and only one bog down in sand which was more driver error than tyre issue. Expecting to easily get another 10,000km's out of these and will replace with the same.
