Ocean Cruising - Drink Packages
« on: July 16, 2016, 04:11:17 PM »
Hi all. A question on drink packages on cruise ships.
We have a cruise booked for the end of the year. We (wife and me) aren't big drinkers but could get benefit out of a drink package. I had a brainwave and thought if we buy one soft drink package and one alcohol package what is to stop you from buying a cocktail then going back a few minutes later or to another bar and getting another for the spouse so effectively sharing it. What systems do they have in place to stop that. Again we aren't big drinkers so wouldn't be rorting it massively.
Thanks.

On the cruises we have been on. It was a requirement that if 1 adult bought an alcoholic drink package, then the other adult in the room had to get the same package.

We went in a Euorpean cruise in May and friends of ours got the drinks package for free and we didn't bother. So they end up getting all of the drinks all of the time. Basically they just went to either different bars or got served by different bartenders. I think it worked mainly because the males pretty much drank the same beers and the women drank the same wine/cocktails

I would think that if you're not big drinkers then why bother? Everything is grossly inflated on cruises anyway so either way you'll pay.
You'd probably get away with it if you're not going back & forth to bars but my guess is they'll be watching if your consumption exceeds reasonable levels

On our Royal Caribbean cruise the drinks package was very expensive and both adults needed purchase. It would appear you would need to drink an awful amount of booze to make it pay, something my wife and I would not do. On the other hand, paying at the bars will cost as well. You are not allowed to bring your own alcohol on board, nor bring alcohol back from day stopovers. They look for alcohol during their 'security' checks when coming back on board. All very tricky.
Smuggling booze on board is very big. Do some research online or you tube. You can purchase containers that look like shampoo and conditioner bottles for smuggling, there are special moulded soft containers to wear under your clothes, and lots more inexpensive ideas to get you favourite drinks on board.
Like most thinks, when big brother says you are not allowed to do something, people will work out a way to do it.
Being poor and tight with $$, we decided to drink water in most cases, while sometimes having a softee from our son's soft drink package, which was good value !!

Have a great cruise !!

We are going in 3 weeks...P&O cruise......free drinks package....any drink up to $12.....I normally drink beer, but I might make an exception and drink bourbon !!!  ;D

This will be our 4th cruise, but the other 3 have been in USA and the drinks package was borderline cost wise either way.....unless the 2 of you are big drinkers, paying for your own drinks is probably the cheapest way to go.....BUT when it's free, hell, go for it !!
