Floor space in a Tambo Cooper
« on: June 22, 2016, 02:51:06 PM »
Hi just wondering if anyone out there has a Tambo Cooper (not the XT) and has traveled with a family. Would 2 sets of bunks fit in the floor space in the main tent?
I have found a few really nice looking campers, but am concerned that there just might not be enough space inside main tent.

Does anyone have experience with one of these campers?

Cheers!

They would fit but it would be tight for space. We had the Cooper and have two kids, we upgraded their stretchers to full size ones and then it became tight in the tent especially on wet days. We now have the Omeo and the extra size of the tent gives us much more room for the kids beds and also for anything else we need

If you can find and XT it would be much better

Great campers and the canvas is super strong and well put together

That's what I thought, but was hoping I wasn't right. It seems we'd fit, but there would be no breathing room.
With 4 boys, I like the idea of them not having to trip over each other all the time. Oh the fights...

Thanks!

That XT looks perfect. Our budget keeps creeping up though. Wasn't originally prepared to pay more than $7K but it seems like we may have to extend the budget to get a good quality camper that fits us.

Don't rush into things. $7000 will get you a good quality used Aussie trailer.

You should look at the Walk Through... Highly sought after, and 12 ft tent.. and going cheap!

Have you had look a at a TrakShak??

They're ideal for a large family.

Does anyone have any opinions about the Trak Shaks? We originally dismissed them, because who wants to cook inside the tent? And they are pretty expensive.
Also having no water set up to the kitchen isn't good - when you are forking out that much money, running water is nice!
But the tent layout seems awesome with 4 little ones. And they seem really robust and easy to set up.

Thoughts?

Plenty of good things said about them.. BUt as you say - expensive...

If your moving to a $20k budget from 7, your options are now endless... dozens and dozens of brands... and styles..

I think you are better off to start with something cheaper, see if the family and you will go for it..

We have one, but never cook inside the tent. Always lift the kitchen off the tailgate and set it up outside under the awning. Kitchen set up works really well, even the water. We free camp for up to a week and only use water we carry. Have not run out yet as you are always aware how much your using as have to replace each drum as it runs out. On our previous camper we used to run out. Plumbed tank with elec pump was treated like home by the family.

Yes robust, good quality canvas, easy to set up even on my own with masses of space. Is great sleeping up high off the ground. Kids use the retreat as a play room. Have slept 2 families in ours easily. Easy to tow, easy to store, low tow ball weight. Can carry a boat, solar panels or extra gear on the rack.

Do need reasonable space to set up and be relatively flat. I do need some help from my wife to pack it up. Just the folding over of the suitcase and tucking the tent in.

Expensive not in my opinion on deal we did on ours. Prices on some of the used units available can seem high. Only worth what a buyer is willing to pay.

My opinion, go look at one and see for yourself if you have one local and good luck.

Good advice on all trailers really...
But that can do your head in.. :)

See if theres anywhere local that hires out trailers, and go see what you think of them that way.. see what items you like and hate, which can also help you decide what to buy

But I say set yourself a budget and stick to it to make your life easier.

We had one for 7 years. They're a great unit, and unbeatable for a large family....IMO.
We cooked inside the tent plenty of times. It is NOT an issue, despite what many would have you believe.
In any event, the kitchen is easily relocated outside. It's not difficult to run water to the kitchen, if that's important to you.

I doubt you'd regret getting one, but you might regret it if you didn't. There are always a few used examples available.
In your situation, they're worth some serious consideration......but there's always the budget to consider too....

Good luck with your search.

I have four and have heard a number of people say the track shack is good for large families and yes there are some good features but in all things considered, I would probably still go for a soft floor even if they were within my budget. Maybe I'm missing something but set up doesn't look that much quicker when everything is considered, we typically spend a fair bit of time under the awning roof and the track shack seems to only have a smallish one, especially if there are six of you, My opinion would be a kitchen inside on the whole would be less than ideal, yes you might be able to move it but then that's extra set up and pack up and there isn't much room under the awning as is. It would be better in rainy weather but I think a normal soft floor is better in fine weather and I would hope there would be more of the latter than the former.

As I said in your introduction post I would be looking for a walk through if funds allowed, that one bird posted looks good. One thing that you might not have thought about that you probably should is door locations and how that will work with fitting in two sets of bunks.

Something else....

TrakShaks pack up inside a suitcase type of enclosure. Not having to muck around with a dusty/muddy pain-in-the-botty canvas bag should not be underestimated.

We very rarely moved the kitchen from the tail gate, and it never created an issue. There are often other cooking methods....fire, etc...
