It comes down to the type of suspension you have on your camper. If the suspension is too rigid for your camper, the corrogations with shake both camper and bikes.
I have seen a few mountain bikes go through there as there is an annual charity ride along the Gibb River rd.

Angus.

We've just got back from that charity ride. No I didn't ride in it, we are part of the volunteer team that helps to run it.
We took our bikes on top of the camper, an AOR Odyssey. Bike rack that holds the frame, bikes sit on their wheels.

Couple of issues, where the rack holds the frame of the bike can rub the paint off if not padded well.
The DUST!!! Gets into everything. We tried wrapping the controls and seats with pallet wrap, sort of worked but needed to be done well.
You'll need to lube the chain every time you want to ride, my pedals have developed a squeak now.
But, It's great to be able to go for a ride anywhere you want. Theres a good fun 5km loop track at Lake Argyle to check out. Go early in the morning.

Use the racks that keep both wheels on

I had the ones where you take the front wheel off and mount the fork to the rack. Ended up cracking one of the forks somewhere on the oodnadatta

talk to George at iSi bicycle carriers. http://www.isi-carriers.com/

his racks are totally bulletproof. We've taken ours across the Simpson with bikes on it at the time. We now have it fitted to the rear of the "half an 80 series" trailer.

He also makes custom racks to suit many types of camper trailers.

and wheel hoops to suit all wheel sizes from kids bikes, to 29ers and fat bikes.
