Snorkel Pre Filters

Just wondering if anyone uses pre filters anymore (Donaldson, foam), and what they think of them? I am thinking of getting something to try and help the air filter a bit and would appreciate any input from the wise.

I tried a Donaldson top spin for awhile, the issue was working out the size and have found the filter does stop some dust but not a lot, I have come to the conclusion it is just to big for the amount of air flowing through it a low engine speeds off road in a convoy for example.

I have just purchased a smaller 6" model to get higher air flow speeds at low engine revs, I'll only put it on when travelling in convoy etc on dusty roads. I have also purchased some of the oiled foam units that fit inside the snorkel to use in tandem with the vortex unit, will be interested to see how they perform on my next trip.

I don't use a foam pre filter over the snorkel head if that is the type you are talking about. I travel with a bloke who swears buy them. But they seem like a lot of work. Depending on conditions he might use two in a day as they get clogged with dust. The last thing I want to be doing while I am away is spending my Evenings washing and oiling filters. I just keep a good eye on my factory air filter and change it as inspection requires. I carry a spare and most places have Toyota air filters available so that works for me so far.

Have a Donaldson Top Spin, smaller size, on top of the snorkel. As HKB says, they filter out a good deal of dust, but they don't stop everything.
To address this, I also run a UniFilter Droopie sock inside the snorkel, which stops most of what gets by the Donaldson. The Top Spin/ Droopie combination keeps the main filter nice and clean.
In real dusty conditions , the Droopie on its' own needs changing twice a day, but with the Top Spin on, it gets changed every few days.

There is a slight drop in performance by running the Top Spin/Droopie combination, but in conditions where both are needed, I'm taking it pretty easy anyway.

l have replaced the standard paper filter with a HiFlow K&N filter . With the snorkel with a Hi flow stainless mesh as a percleaner  then the oiled filter . Dose the job . Every few days wash out the percleaner of dust & good to go  .

HKB - I know what you mean. I had a 10" Donaldson and thought it was useless as it didn't spin up the dust at all at the speed I was travelling.

GeoffA - I like the belt and braces approach, I am certainly leaning towards this combination.

Speewa - What on earth is a Hi flow stainless mesh pre cleaner? I tried looking it up online but couldn't find it.

I run Unifilter foam prefilters. Yes theyre a pain and messy if you put too much oil on them. I use them religously and the factory paper filter in the 200. They are a must if your traveling in convoy.

Interesting.. the one I had when I fitted it had a small seed nut in it and it spun up awesomely... I was actually surprised how good it worked - this was at idle speed...

On a previous vehicle I owned I ran a 7" Donaldson and it constantly had a great swirl of dust racing around in side of it. My current machine has a turbo on it and I was advised to fit a 10" Donaldson to allow for more airflow that the turbo would require. On the first dusty trip I went on I duly swapped the ram head for the Donaldson and noticed it wasn't creating the usual swirl action I was used to. For some reason I was watching 4WD TV and they had Andrew Leimroth from Berrimah Diesel on it, and he was advising using the 7" filter over the 10" due to the fact that at low revs (where you are usually using Donaldsons) the 10" filter was not developing enough inflow to spin efficiently. I would well imagine that the engine would starve for air when pushed hard.

Pod Filter could be another name for it. It seemed to work quite well.
