Ive had one of these for 6 years now and its reliable and never fails to split the hardest wood, top machine.

I have a 20T millers fall version and more than happy. Have split some real twisted stuff and has done the job no worries.

For the $600 odd I paid for it a few years ago if it lasts me 6 to 8 years more than worth it, works out cheaper than hiring and I don't have to split the whole lot in a hurry, can do it bit by bit.

I hired a Toro (Praxis) 28 ton job on Tuesday, it went really well and split everything I threw in it. Iron bark, scribbly gum and the forks of trees you just can't touch with an axe of a block splitter, it just powered through them.

9hp subaru motor running for 5 hours was 1 tank full. If i had the $$ and could justify it, I get one, but $170 for be to process 6m3 of wood in a day, which is more wood than we will use in 2 years, I can't really justify it. And I don't have to do any maintenance on it, I just take it back.

I've got an Oregon 28 ton splitter.
It works a treat.
It has a Kohler 9hp petrol motor that starts first pull every time.
The reason I went for this splitter is that the cycle time is much quicker than most of the Chinese splitters on the market.
I've seen the Millers Falls 40 ton splitters in action and the Oregon craps all over it in speed and splitting power.
IMO a quality pull start motor is a far better option than an electric start Chonda.
The Oregon splitter was not much more expensive than the Chinese units.

Yeah the chariot wheel screw works well but you'd want to be careful a split log doesn't jump off and under the back of the wheel because guess what could happen if it makes contact with the rotating tyre and the ground? I'd be concerned about how he is casually kicking the log. The cuff of his jeans catching on the spike and it would rip off his leg or beat him to death.

Yes the open spike is the obvious danger and to use it seriously and regularly you'd want a safer feed mechanism. Perhaps a trolley on rail setup and all attached to a round plate with a hole in the centre that fits over the screw but there's no doubt it's a clever use of existing machinery without the extra cost and maintenance of a standalone machine.

The tax return has been received and I'm $1,500 better off than expected, so have decided to spec up and invest for the longer term. Anyone got any bad feedback on Rover products?

Looking at these 2 options, but on the bigger unit, for the extra $$'s I can get bigger capacity, bigger motor and 5 year warranty. I'll be supporting a local business who service all our mowers, chainsaws etc. Plus if I buy in my son's name, we can get the gst back.

Thoughts?

Yeah, I get you on the VHC, I hate the cold. The big problem with a lot of the yank ones is they mainly use softwood, pines and oaks etc. Be interesting to see how they perform with a bit of wriggly grain iron bark eh?

I wish I was as hands-on as my old man. He built his himself. He splits 2 foot thick bloodwood (f*cking hard, hardwood) in it. He's awesome and crazy and brilliant all at the same time!

I forget what Dad says it pushed (in tons). Actually I'll be down there tomorrow so I'll ask some details and post them back. I know he said it cost him about $6k or so. And that's mainly second hand parts (new ram and controller though). So you can imagine, it doesn't stuff about!

The ram is about 200mm. It can push about 40 tons. The cutter blades are 1/2 inch hardened steel. Ram length is about 4 foot. 20 HP Kohler petrol engine. Can't remember the size of the actual pump. It's mean though!
