Starter motor in Landcruiser dying

Damn starter motor in my 105 landcruiser is dying.

There are 2 options get some parts and fix it for $58 or get a oem one from ebay with 5 year replacement Warranty for $190.00 posted here to Mt Barnett.

Thoughts please.

If you are certain the parts will fix the problem, then that would be the best result IMO.

Thats the hard part I am not sure. My thoughts were to get the new one just in case the parts did not fix it. Our mail plane is once a week so may get the parts at a later date and keep the old one.

Yeah but to get the gangsta version is nearly 11k


Seriously though. I would go new. Hate doing jobs two and three times and I'm in the city. If i lived in the outback. Well....... buying new is a no brainer IMO.
 Seems like a pretty decent price too

Could always just undo the power wires 13 or 14  mm nut from memory  [ careful not to short it out ]  undo the three screws of the  solenoid end plate cover, drop the solenoid plunger out and clean the copper contact plates up with some emmery cloth [ will be worn a bit and carbon burn deposits  most likely ] then reassemble ..
Our V6 Four runner took all of 15 minutes to do and didnt have to remove the starter from the engine .. Has been strong now for thhree years since doing it .
Might be worth giving this a try first got nothing to lose eccept 15 minutes and enjoying a couple of beers .

190 bucks seems pretty cheap, considering where you are and the comfort of having a reliable starter motor. If its more than a couple of years old I'd just replace it

if your starter is anything like my old 1HZ 80 series then the contact simply wear out. Easy enough job to remove and inspect to insure thats your issue before ordering parts

What I have been told is that removing the starter motor is a pain.
Therefore I would go for a new one so you know it is all good.
Otherwise you have to get the starter out again.

You won't get a new OEM (Denso) starter for under $200. You'll be lucky to get a secondhand one from the wreckers delivered for that money.

You will buy some piece of Shit off eBay with the letters O, E and M for under $200 though. It guaranteed to let you down within 5 years.

You should be able to get an exchange Denso unit from an auto elec for about the same coin.

Don't buy the cheap one, it'll let you down.

Sounds cheap enough just to get a new one. the starter on my BMW bike cost me $450 and it's 1/4 the size of the one in my LC105

removing it isn't the issue, but peace of mind its going to when when your stuck somewhere is worth it.

Just ordered one from an auto electrician in Broome. A denco  / Denso one for $388.00. Told him the brand i had and he said they are crap. Apparantly toyota use the one I am getting.

Happy with that.

If the solenoid setup is the same as Hilux’s, then it’s a common issue with the contacts burning out.  Happen to my Hilux a few years, you had to key it up to half a dozen times before it would fire.  Pulled the starter one weekend and filed the contacts clean.  Good as gold with no issues for the next 6 months.  Then when I pulled the gearbox to do the clutch, I grabbed a contact kit for $40 and replaced them.  No issues from then on.


Keep the old starter and clean or replace the contacts for a spare.
