What do you reckon.... Strange scratches?
« on: May 27, 2016, 01:02:40 PM »
In keeping with this car's mission to drive me mad,  I noticed these scratches on my tailgate on the weekend.
What do you think? A break-in attempt?
I can't think of anything that could have been dragged out clumsily over that lip that would have made scratches like that?

Look similar to scratches I've seen made by a chainsaw

Are they possibly creases, rather than scratch marks? Maybe something has hit that edge, bent the bumper in and the paint has cracked along that crease line?

Its a common sort of "crack" on high stress areas on a bike, like the bottom bracket or headtube. There will be enough movement to "crack" the paint, but the metal or carbon is fine.

Or a bush saw blade being dragged sideways?

Nope. Lower bit is the lower tailgate section.

Maybe. Or a possum?  I do have what looks like animal scratches on another part of the car.

Yes it does look like a moving chain/blade/disc skipping along.
Can't think for the life of me how I might have done it.  Last project was temporarily fitting a reversing camera near the door latch/ button, but no power tools were used. The inside trim was fully removed to run the cables.

Parked late at night in a car park where drunk punters might fight?  Similar to scratches I've seen made by studded belts. If some one was knocked down/fell down against your car it might result in marks like that.

Reverse parked into a garden/bush with scratchy branches.  Maybe the wind rubbed a twig or branch backwards and forwards whilst parked. ????

To me it looks like something has flexed the bumper and the paint has cracked when it couldn't flex anymore. So maybe someone nudged it a little somewhere else and that was the stress point that the paint cracked at. Also light bumps don't always leave marks. But I'd bet a beer on it that it's what has happened here

Could it be that when you removed the inside trim to run wires the stainless steel retaining clips inside the trim have scratched it at some stage during the wiring install, maybe jammed against it if the door had been closed

Yeah, I was wondering that, but all the clips are plastic.

the lower bit is the bottom portion of the tailgate, not the bumper, so any impact/force should have left indentations.

Hmm, I do park rear in a lot, so that's a possibility.

The scratches seem to be too specific in their distance apart to be made by anything not man made... Something with evenly spaced scratchy bits is my guess... ;D

Hi,
I think Geoffa has it nailed.
Regularly spaced scratches from the wire mesh, similar wriggling lines as the impact  stopped the trolley.

Yep I agree. I think its had something move up against it while the tailgate was down.

Won't polish out?

I reckon whatever it was. ...   the scratching may have started from the vertical - then going back into the vehicle across the bumber....

I suggest this because a. The scratching starts mild at the front, then gets deeper heading back   b. The scratching on the far left goes upto the light; and c. About 7 scratch marks from the left - there appears to be some "dust bits from the scratch" - at the back of the scratch - towards the vehicle. ...

If it was my car the first question I'd be asking my misses why she used the lower tail gate to stop the trolley rolling away.
