Anyone been to Bowen
« on: May 24, 2016, 08:04:02 PM »
As the title suggests I am looking for recommendations of places to stay in Bowen.
Planning on a holiday park stay due to a new baby on board but there is a choice of about 5 different parks.
The big 4 looks good but seems mainly for cabins and vans with not many camper trailer sites.
We've been through there before for a lunch stop but never stayed longer so any suggestions would be appreciated.

We stayed at Wangaratta at the beach. Small, older, cheap. Decent pool. Clean amenities.  Access to sandy protected beach by walking out back gate and across end of the golf course.  Beachside walk is nice.  Limited camper trailer spots.  Quiet, but pub on the coroner does popular meals.

The big 4 looks nice, but water access is via a concrete staircase to a rocky bit of beach. So not so great if you actually want to swim or launch a kayak.

Horseshoe bay is a popular small beach so very crowded.

Rose Bay is backpacker heaven.  Was told it is the spot to buy drugs.

If you like somewhere quiet then Hideaway Bay (south of Bowen) is worth a thought.  http://www.hydeawaybaycaravanpark.com.au/

An old style caravan park that is quiet with a short stroll to an almost deserted beach.  It's a small hamlet with mainly holiday homes.  BUT it is a drive to any facilities.  The resort is a good place for a meal 3km or Dingo Beach (7km) has a pub.

Airlie Beach is about 40km south and Bowen about 80km north have all your other needs.

We spent an enjoyable week there once.

Cheers

Stayed a while ago at I think horse shoe bay van park it was in the southern corner of a small bay at the base of a mountain.  Small sites, sand/dirt, we were young so amenities did not worry us to much but I know they were not that flash.  Got TV reception for the wife to watch Neighbours and the hill near the park is nice to climb for a look out but would not stay for a week.

Have to agree that Hydeaway Bay Caravan park is very pleasant and well run.

The big 4 is good if you have kids & yes limited sites for campers. As stated Horseshoe bay is small sites & tight access. Wangarratta is ok,  used to have a few permanents.
There is another behindvthe pub at queens beach (cant remember name) very well kept & plenty of sites, gr8 camp kitchen & off the esplanade so quiet.
Imo the big 4 is the pick but never took the camper there.
There is a park in town close to main esplanade but have been told its tight access as well.
Do a check on wiki camps, i always found their reviews good info

All men dream but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes to make it possible.

Thanks for the constructive comments  (and the not so ones too). Booked a site at the Big4, we've stayed at Big4 parks before and they're always well equipped for family's with kids so I'll run with that. This is the 1st trip away with both kids and will be the baby's 1st ever camping trip so we are all excited to be getting back into it after a break that's been way too long.
Hopefully in the future  we'll get back to roughing it in the bush and on the beach but for now the saying "happy wife/happy life" seems to be the controlling factor.
Oh yeah and no plans to head east of west unless it's on a big fishing boat out to the reef😄
