Security for DO35 Offroad Hitch
« on: May 18, 2016, 04:23:31 PM »
On our new camper we will have the DO35 off road hitch.
Does anyone have one? What do you use for security for when you are off for the day?
We will also have something on one of the wheels but feel there should also be something on the hitch.

Thanks Rob deb

We just use a bike lock (cable type) that I loop around the draw bar and through the hole on the hitch. Probably not the most secure but will slow them down.

You can buy a security pin from the manufacturer but I have never bothered.

We use the hitch lock made by the same company that makes the DO35 hitch although we usually only use it when our camper trailer is fully packed up and parked somewhere.

We've got the DO35. And I never bother. I use the thickest chain Bunnings sell through the wheel and around the axle with the strongest padlock, and padlock the Safety chain.

X3. Plus lock the chains around the jockey wheel shaft so it can't be raised.

BTW Vehicle Components is now called Cruisemaster.

Here's a an option for securing both the DO35 and the safety chains (pic and description borrowed from an Ultimate Camper user).

If you turn the hitch forward 90 degrees you can drop the safety chains through the gap, wrap them around the hitch then lock them with a good padlock. Still only a deterrent but it is better than nothing.

A thief can always hook his own chains up and use them for a tow.

Good luck. It takes me bloody 2 hrs to pack up all our crap. If they want to pack up and take the trailer good luck to them.

Usually they just take the trailer and that's it.  Leaving anything they can't make off with quickly.

Yeah but they won’t be able to turn the hitch to hook the trailer up.
That’s a good idea that way.

He ignores the hitch.  Connects with his own chains and shackles.

For the most part this kind of theft isn't going to be impulsive IMO. He'll have been studying a parked trailer.

If he can get to it unobserved he'll bring an angle grinder and all of this is beside the point.

We use the Master Lock Bike Chain Key Lock.  it has the braided steel cable for strong cut resistance. It loops through the D035 and secures the chains.  We only use it rarely in parks.

I would think it would not not hard just to shackle two new chains onto the trailer, even if your chains are locked up together.
If I was looking for security I would go with a wheel clamp that covers over the wheel nuts as well.
Some thing like this one, I would think. There would be better brands but you get the idea.

have a look at this video.

Zaccly.

That's why mine has an alarm/tracker as well as locks.

It's ridiculous - CTs costing as much as a car come with no security at all.
