Hybrid campers?

Hi
I have done a lot of searches on here, and have learned a lot, but still haven't found what I'm looking for. Does anyone know of a caravan type set up, that is offroad (Gibb River Road standard), sleeps 6 and has an external kitchen? It also ideally would be Australian made, and not a custom.

Failing that, would you take a Jayco base station or Outback Expanda on the GRR?

I think my best bet would be a soft floor camper, but I'm not convinced I want to pay for quality canvas and increased set up time what I would be paying for a hard roof caravan.

Hi and welcome to myswag.

Heaps and heaps of caravans are capable of travelling the Gibb River Road.  How they are loaded and how they are towed will effect how well they cope.

Thanks, I'd be more likely to spend more on a caravan or hybrid than a camper, and the ones we have looked at are the Jayco Outback base station and Expanda. They are around $65 000 new, so that would be the top price. I'd also hope to get a second hand one over brand new.

I would prefer a hybrid, as we just don't cook inside and it's a waste of much needed interior space.

ETA - Wow, that Bruder is amazing, but I'd have to sell a couple of kids to pay for it, and then I'd be able to get a hybrid with fewer beds

Friends did a Lap of the Map, incuding the Gibb, in a bog standard Expanda.  No issues at all.

No idea mate. A 6 berth would be hard to get in a hybrid.

North Coast Campers arent fixed to their layout and very good build quality, but as KB said, hybrids with your sleeping requirements are as rare as chicken lips.

Complete campsite have the exodus 16 which i think you can option with the queen bed and four bunks but deletes internal kitchen but has great external kitchen anyway. Might be up your alley.

I have 4 kids like yourself, as our price range was at the other extremity of the spectrum the only option was a soft floor, however we don't intend on doing much touring in the near future so set up times wernt as big of an issue. If we were however going to do a lot of remote touring and I had the money I would love to turn This into a extremely capable off road motor home.

How important is the outside cooking?  The Jayco Hawk/Eagle/Swan have sleeping for 6 and you can get the options such as outside BBQ etc (we went with our Baby Q instead).  The OB versions Will certainly go where you want at less cost than the Base Station / Expanda

We did the soft floor camper with 4 kids and were going to upgrade to a caravan, as we were sick of the set up times/poles etc.  Ended up getting the Jayco Swan OB instead as we like the 'open outdoors' feel like a camper trailer but increased comforts etc.

I also have a family of 6, I found it hard to find some thing that worked for us. We too wanted to be able to sleep all 6 without dramas and have a out door kitchen, But I didn't what to spend the big dollars. So I am built my own!
A couple of my friends all have familys of  6 too, one of them have just brought a Jayco Expanda and the other is looking at the Golf Maxxi 501 http://golfcaravans.com.au/example-category/golf-savannah-maxxi-501/

Thanks for your replies.
At the moment, we have an older Jayco Outback Finch. We *just* fit into it, with no room for storage. We could put up the awning...but we are about to go on road for about 3 months, and that would get annoying very quickly. The kitchen just feels like wasted space. Our Finch doesn't have independent suspension either, so it could be a bumpy trip.
We are a few years away from some kids sleeping outside in swags.
The Golf Maxi looks alright.
I wish I'd thought a different van was possible a year ago, then we might have had time for a custom.

Goldstream thunder look pretty good. No internal cooking with a great slide out kitchen. They suggest it sleeps 5 which is one less than you need unfortunately

I think it depends on your definition of outside kitchen. If you want a camper version , then i think the CC Exodus 16 will be your only option... But that will be outside your stated budget and you wont get 2nd hand in your budget as they are only new...if you go for a van with a much reduced outside kitchen, there are many more options...
