Moreton Island Saturday
« on: April 11, 2016, 06:21:56 AM »
Hi All,

Not really a CT or camping post but thought some of you might be interested in having a look at this.
Took our boat over to Moreton Island on Saturday morning in perfect weather and went over to the wrecks just north of Tangalooma where we fished for an hours or so, but caught only small pickers. Then had a snorkel around the wrecks which was amazing with all the different species of fish....including big bream, tusk fish etc...and also snapper hanging around the deeper parts which was a big tease. Had morning tea on the boat then went for a swim off the beach and we decided to head down to the southern end of Moreton Island and have an early lunch at the Gutter Bar at Kooringal, which we've seen featured on TV many times. Never been down there before ( even when we've taken the fourbie over ) and we were all amazed at just how beautiful this area is...picture postcard stuff....that is right on Brisbane's doorstep.
Had a fantastic morning and enjoyed it so much we will be going back again asap.

Cheers
Rob

I love Moreton. One of my favourite places.  It's all gorgeous. We stayed down at Kooringal last September. Sometimes there can be a midgie problem on the southern end. My kids called it the midgie forest as they were pretty lively. 😄

Thanks for sharing.

Dumb question

Do you need a boat to snorkle the wrecks or is it close enough to swim out to them from the shoreline????

You can, but a pretty good tidal run goes through there.

You see Jap tourists heading south for the winter around this time of year.
Even with swim fins, you'd want to be fit.

Just my 2 cents worth.

It was a cracker of a week-end for boating.....  ;D

We spent a very lazy Sunday in our fav spot on Fraser. (Prolly the best day ever, so says Mrs. Jeepers.)

As mentioned you need to pick your tide and you'll fin across ok from the beach. Easier on your back with some air in a bcd.

Definately....tide can certainly get along there.
For snorkelling we anchored on the western side of the wrecks first....thinking that it was shallower there, it would be easy getting back to the boat.
Wrong !!
Then went round the eastern side and anchored up again. Tide run was a bit better but it still races through in between the wrecks and you do have to be careful as the wrecks are covered in oysters which are obviously sharp.
Yes...I have seen people swimming over from shore....but I would be too scared :)

Cheers

yes my party swam over from shore no worries just need to start up the beach a bit from where you want to end up approx at the wrecks. had fins though to make it quicker, bit concerning going over and looking into the dark blue in the middle of the crossing but well worth it. trying to get my group back there in nov, anyone know of any decent sized rental houses aside from the usual stayz list etc.
