Long term trip did you take ..
« on: April 10, 2016, 08:26:10 AM »
After getting the answer to the webber question I thought I would pose a few more  if you took them did you regret it ..if you did not did you wish you had

1 - Awning walls ..

2- annex matting

3- camp oven / bbq plate for fire

4- draft skirt thingy that clips under trailer around sides

Its amazing how much room canvass takes up so i am thinking of just the annex and thats it no walls...mrs wants to take the whole shooting match ..but being dry season in Kimberly i just cant see a need for a full set of annex walls..most times I prob wont even use the annex ..just cook and then pack tail gate shut overnight.

Theo,

Our last long trip was 8 weeks up Nth Qld and NT....and this is what we will be doing for our Kimberleys trip

1 - Awning walls ..did take and wont take in future (didn't get with this camper for that reason) (Except the kitchen wall...depending on your setup, a wall next to the kitchen we did use). In this new camper, we don't have the same exposure.

2- annex matting...did take and will take (multi night stopovers and red dirt areas)

3- camp oven / bbq plate for fire - took camp oven and will take camp oven...wont take BBQ plate (Camp oven - Kerry had it double up as large 'pot' to use on the cooktop for stews etc)

4- draft skirt thingy that clips under trailer around sides - did take skirt but wont take in future..don't have in new camper and don;t want

Hope that helps

Theo,

Awning walls are handy if holed up somewhere & the wind is blowing in, we used one behind the kitchen nearly all the time & another small one on that corner a bit & all the walls hardly ever - draft skirt once.

Matting used a fair bit, especially when there was dirt/sand etc

Camp over, yep but only used when we stayed more than 2 nights, took a BBQ plate once

Packing things away at night certainly makes it easier in the mornings

Have a great trip.

Took everything Theo and only used the matting. If you don't plan on staying anywhere for more than a few days, IMO wouldn't bother.

Theo,

On our Kimberley trip we carried everything, and if we where going again we do things very different.
We don't have any walls for out KK and we have never looked for them, if it's windy for a night you just make do. As for the draft skirts, we had all of them on our last camper and never ever used them.
We take 2 camp ovens, a small one that fits inside the bigger one, both can double up as a pot on the stove if needed.
We don't take a plate for the fire, as there is a lot of places a fire isnt possible.
The matting we always take, but don't often use. We would use it if we where in one place for a do few days and the ground wasn't very good, but I'm always in bare feet anyway......

We recently did a 4 month lap of Australia, from northern winter to southern winter.
Took all canvas, used awning, and ground mat. Never used walls or draught skirt.
I wasnt too concerned about carrying all the canvas as it was strapped up on the roof rack in plastic heavy duty bags, separated into awning and walls kits.
Took Oz pig, jury still out on that one.
Took camp oven and Biji BBQ plate, used them a fair bit.
Regards.

We always take a camp oven , but it's a hilly Billy spun steel so it's light and can be made do with a small  kindling fire on the lid if needed

I carry two cgear mats one large one small (smallest) we only use the big one on holidays at Xmas where we are for a week or so. But use the smallest all the time it's great for keeping crap out. Just spread it near the doorway. Generally spent need pegging down either.

And just bought a bidgee Barbie yesterday. The BBQ plates just too heavy IMO.
Here for a good time, not a long time!

1 - Awning walls ..          Took them all, only ever used them once when we had a couple of days of drizzly weather.

2- annex matting            Used it a lot, as once your away from the coast, a lot of places don't have much grass. we also take a piese of artificial grass that is about 1m x 1.5m. It's nice to use a mat when camped where there is only dirt..

3- camp oven / bbq plate for fire          Camp oven yes (but a lot less now with the webber), BBQ plate- took it on 1 trip, never used, never taken again.

4- draft skirt thingy that clips under trailer around sides-            taken, but never used.

1 - Awning walls .....No. We don't have them, but wouldn't take them anyway.

2- annex matting.....We don't use it now. More trouble than it's worth. A couple of interlocking rubber mats at the door is enough.

3- camp oven / bbq plate for fire.....Took the camp oven, but didn't use it. The Weber Q got a couple of runs.

4- draft skirt thingy that clips under trailer around sides.....No. We don't one, but wouldn't take it anyway.

1 - Awning walls ..          Only take the kitchen wall, for behind tailgate, but unless staying for more than 2 nights don't bother with the awning (and kitchen wall)

2- annex matting            Yep and use it every stop, don't bother pegging it down.

3- camp oven / bbq plate for fire          Webber only.

4- draft skirt thingy that clips under trailer around sides-            nope, only ever used mine once

Awesome replies  :cup: :cup: thanks to everyone and I am sure more to come..

We just optioned up the walls for the breakaway as they are really nice quality and with longer beach stays I think will be a good thing as the breakaway is after all just a camper trailer so you will need some room to sit on longer stays.

That said I think i will follow the advice of you lot and leave all the walls at home  :cup:

BBQ plate just got cut..
camp oven cut replaced with webber  ;D
draft skirts cut

Biggest trip we have done so far is 4 weeks, longer may require different needs. Pretty much as above
1 - Awning walls ..          Had them on our first camper, never used them. A single wall for the kitchen side would have made things a little easier but not a dealbreaker.

2- annex matting            Used it all the time except the rare time we were in a CP.

3- camp oven / bbq plate for fire          Camp oven was used a bit, BBQ plate tried a few times but not worth the trouble.

4- draft skirt thingy that clips under trailer around sides-            Never had one.

A lot of the NPs don't allow fires, might be worth ringing the ranger/s to find current info. Cooking on the fire every night requires a bit of effort, we only had the camp fire for warmth/atmosphere and cooking marshmallows!!!

Never used walls  or draught curtain on our last annexe, dont have one on the new van.
Annexe matting makes camping in the dirt much easier.
Dont bother with bbq plate unless longer term set up, Webber wins hands down, but always carry the camp oven.

Cheers Glen

Kitchen wall on camper to stop wind blowing out burners.  Makes preparing food much easier.

Did three months with the van last winter. Started with no walls, came home with mesh ones as got fed up with the wind at various places.

1-  no don't own any

2- no don't own any

3-  yes to both. Used camp oven as big pot also and have a hillbilly fire stand kit for bbq plate. Used when ever we had a fire.

4- don't own any.

Agree with previous comment. Pack away as much as you can the night before or only pull out what you really need and put it away as soon as you are done. Makes getting away in the mornings easy.
