Offroad Camper Trailer for family of 5
« on: March 31, 2016, 10:11:14 PM »
We're a family of 5 - three girls under the age of 7. We've lived in Broome, WA for the last 18 months and want to buy an offroad camper trailer to make the most of what the Kimberley has to offer. We've done a fair bit of research and were initially looking at the Trackabout Safari Extenda. However, the Patriot X1 Limited Edition has really caught our eye now. The main reasons for this are that it is a) purpose built for the rugged environment of the Kimberley b) fairly light so would be easy to take to some of the more inhospitable and off the beaten track locations and c) has a king size bed (something we're used to at home). I guess the only question mark is it's size. Is it really big enough for a family of 5? I know the owners of Patriot have 3 kids of their own and purpose built the X1 LE to suit their needs, but I'd be keen to know what others think.

Welcome to myswag Jared.

With your sort of budget, you have many options out there.  The Patriot is an awesome looking trailer with lots of innovative ideas.

Happy camping

To start with I am a bit biased as we have a Trackabout camper. Just the other week we were comparing it to a Patriot. My opinion Patriot for two people moving constantly, Trackabout would suit your family situation. Looking long term you may not do all your camping in the Kimberly. We got all the options, Webasto, extra water tanks etc and have not looked back. The soft floor will accommodate the kids and associated stuff. The fact you can "add" on walls or screens as needed on the Trackabout it a bonus. It does rain at the most in opportune moments and will give you that extra room not to mention protection from wind and driving rain. Much emphasis is put on "set" up time. Your camping, just enjoy the moment. We have used ours 8 times in 5 months and get better each time.

Comparing  a Trackabout Extenda to a Patriot is like comparing apples to oranges. Both are quality campers but vastly different. Having just been through the same process and deciding to purchase a Trackabout, rightly or wrongly we decided that the X1 would not suit our family and planned camping style.

Have you looked at Complete Campsite Or Follow Me Campers? Both offer walk up trailers much more like the Trackabout, to give you a better comparison. Check out the link to my soon to be trailer (November) below in my signature for an idea of the thought process we went through!

whats your budget?

For that many kids, I'd stop looking at hard floors.

Personally, I wouldn't be worried about the size.  We've got a family of 5 and have a small rear fold camper. The two eldest (8&6) are in swags that go under the 4x4 awning.  My trailer is 3mx1.85m, and the soft floor tent area is only about 2.5mx1.85m!!  The camper has got a big awning that runs the length of the camper though. We are campers who tend to live outside, and under the awning,  we hardly go inside the tent area. Friends of ours have the traditional side fold and 3 kids, and they admit they couldn't cope with our set up, so YMMV. The only thing we struggle with is water as it has a small tank so we have to take a couple of extra jerries along.

For me, weight, size and off road ability was a big consideration too. Trackabouts are about 5m long when packed up, My trailer, the X1's and DOT's are about 3m which helps with your rampover.

A low weight is something the Patriot and Drifta also have going for them which reduces fuel use and stress on the tug. Trackabouts start at 1T, the X1 LE is about 860kg dry, and the DOT 6 is 700kg dry, but they do sacrifice payload. Trackabout have about 900kg-1T payload the, X1 LE payload is only 340kg, the DOT is 500kg. Once you add the 140litres of water in the X1LE, you don't have a lot left (200kg).  My trailer is about 810 dry, and a smidge over 1T loaded including 100L of water.  So we carry all the food and the fridge in the tug.

We did look at new Cubs, Trackabouts, Patriots, and the Drifta Offroad Tourer but I really couldn't justify the price so we compromised on the second hand and kept $20-30k in my pocket...   And $40k for the Base X1 LE is a lot of coin....

Thanks for all of the advice guys - greatly appreciated. The more advice we get from people in the know and people who have been through a similar process, the easier it will become for us  :D Bird - in terms of our our budget, I've accepted that we might spend something in the order of $45k.....that being said, I'd happily have some change in my pocket!

Also worth thinking about having the kids in a 30 sec tent next to the camper instead of a big soft floor.  Quicker to set up and when they are older they will be happy to have own space.    We have three girls as well and ended up with an Adventure camper. Extremely rugged and great storage needed for the family. Have a look at my link in the signature to find out more. Good luck with what ever you get

Metalian campers are now advertising on here also.  Similar to the Patriot, within your budget, have a kids room etc.  Imported from SA.

That was our original set up and quite versatile but we've now moved the kids to swags. Still got the 30s tent
