Best 4wd Club in Melbourne
« on: March 10, 2016, 09:19:49 PM »
Righto,

I reckon it's time I joined a club in Eastern Melbourne somewhere now that I've bought my first real 4wd.

Have been camper trailering via the Kia Sorrento for a few years in caravan parks. Now want to swag in the bush.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a good club that is friendly and has plenty of good trips?

Interesting question. Have you thought about checking Four Wheel Drive Victoria's website  (http://www.fwdvictoria.org.au/default0.asp?First=) that has a list of clubs.

I am not sure how much clearance the Sorrento has, but this might be a limiting factor for quite a few clubs if it is poor.

You can certainly have a lot of fun within a club, and it is a great way to gather more knowledge about things 4WD.

Clubs suck.

I tried a few clubs when I lived in Melbourne. The biggest things that turned me off were,

 - Committee's, I understand clubs need them, but most have their head buried up their arse and won't do anything they don't want to do. If you just want to go up the Craig's Hut for example, you have to submitt the request through them, elect a trip leader, provide a route card, bla, bla, bla bla.......

Instead, ring a couple of mate, and just drive there.

  - Recovery training. I hold a certified recovery course certificate (work requirement completed through a RTO) and the clubs I looked at wouldn't recignise it. I had to attend "Ol'mates" training. Why, because he has been driving for 20 years and knows everything. Not certified, not a registered as a certified RTO and I had to pay him for the privilege.

 - if you want to go out with another club member, you cannot. You have to invite everybody else. A simple day trip turns into an over complicated mission.

- like most clubs and associations these days, the committee have been around since the 60 Series was introduced and don't like change. Too many old farts justifying their positions. It's a 4wd club, not the local council........

 - what finally turned me off, I went to one clubs meeting to see how they operate. I was invited by another forum member from another forum. Sounded promising, so I gave it a go. Nope, instead of talking about 4wd's, they spent 50 minutes discussing what shade of purple should the clubs shirts be.

Never been to a club since.

But my biggest gripe, is these clean up days like the one on Fraser Island. I have always wanted to help clean up the island or local forests, but I cannot. Fkn clubs get in, unless you are a member, you cannot participate. I have every right to be there as they do.

My advice, go along to a couple of clubs and their meetings, you will soon relies what club suits and what doesn't.

Or, jump onto a social media webpage and get yourself onto a tag along.

4wd Clubs are useful if you don't have myswag :)

Back in the old days when there was no Internet I was in a club, all of the above from JR sounds pretty accurate. That said I still have some life long friends through the club.

I'm sure there are plenty of Mexican locals who you can go on a swag night with without having to join a club.

Well said JR. I also looked at a few with similar conclusions.

Perhaps consider a 4WD training day through an independent provider to give yourself some comfort in your and your vehicle's ability, then join in a MySwag trip.

I've been in a few 4b clubs 1 in Sydney and 2 in Melbourne, and your partly right, and mainly wrong.

Our club if you want to run a trip, you just do it. We encourage people to run trips - that's why we are there... Route Cards??? elec trip leader - all clubs I've been in who ever wants to run the trip is the leader. How can someone who doesn't know where the trip is going run it ???

Yes you have to tell the trip coordinator - this is to cover you for insurance - quite a nice thing to have if it hits the fan and you want to keep your house..

He will tell the other members by email or at a meeting about when where, and who etc, and they put their name on a list. When list is full, its full.

I've arranged a trip up the huts this weekend and theres 16 cars going in 2 groups.
I just said I was going and who ever wants to join me, come along - and they did. I've had to pull out cause my dad aint well, so another dude going said he'd be happy to run it. Gave him the trip notes, and map and away they go.

Clubs aren't for everyone, same as in anything sport, life etc - the politics are what kill them for me, but luckily ours has **** all of that bullShit but the last club I was in was horrific for politics and old pricks standing up trying to feel important and have their moment in the spotlight..

I'm with Bird on this one. I think if you are reasonably new to 4WDing then clubs are a good thing as they give you a supported introduction to a great world.

I have been in 2 clubs, neither charged for Driver Training, and all instructors were qualified.

Nothing stopping you from going with just another club member, as long as you didn't want the trip to be a 'club' trip. We made great friends in the club that we then went on our own trips together when we wanted small trips.

Clubs also offer the safety factor if you are not experienced in a particular trip environment (desert crossing, The Cape, High Country, etc) and would like to have company in case anything goes wrong. I think this is especially true if you are new to these areas. I know my wife and myself were quite nervous when we first started, but now do quite extensive trips by ourselves and feel quite relaxed about it. I also believe that with experience the need for clubs reduces, although some travellers need company it seems.

As Bird said, not everyone will like clubs, and clubs will not like everyone, you need to try them on for size before you buy.

I was in a club for 8 years but left because of the politics and infighting, better off with a bunch of like minded individual's. I have not been on any the local trips with Myswag guys yet but hope to once i have my trailer setup, being a Landy owner i have found more friends and been on more outings in the 14 odd years i have been on AULRO than i ever did in a club.

I'm currently secretary of our club and get heaps of membership enquiries... I always tell the people that they should try 3-4 clubs, goto 2-3 meetings at each one, and do 2-3 trips with each one before they hand over their hard earned... Usually after 1 trip you'll know if they are for you, the second trip just reinforces that. 2-3 meetings will tell you if the bullShit levels are acceptable...
I found the bigger the club, the more politics and bullShit.. like you have to own a "certain brand" to be on a committee

Theres also all sorts of clubs..
http://www.4wdvictoria.org.au/index.php/4wd-clubs
Old fart clubs
clubs that run midweek only trips
softroaders
medium trip clubs
hardcore clubs
clubs that do mainly large trips
throw the keys in the pot clubs...

I've currently started a gig where our club invites clubs from out of our region to come do trips, and then they can show us around their area.. Great way to find the secret tracks :D

I'm vice chairman for WA4WDA (Western Australia 4WD Association). We are the governing body for all affiliate clubs in WA.

Advantages of being a club member (and in a club affiliated with their respective state association).

The WA 4WD Association is the peak body that liaises with Government agencies to assists in keeping tracks open and accessible for four wheel drive member club.
The Government will not negotiate with individual clubs only their associations.
WA4WDA is affiliated with Australian Four Wheel Drive Council of Australia and Track Care WA Inc.

Australian Four Wheel Drive Council of Australia:
A national insurance scheme is available to Association member clubs and their members who will be covered for the following

(a) Public liability protection.
(b) Specific landowner's liability cover.
(c) Management and association official's indemnity.
(d) Volunteer workers compensation insurance.
(e) Fraud.

· This coverage is specific to the public liability in an event or voluntary workers situation.

·  It does not cover your vehicle which must be covered under your own personal insurance.

· Track Care WA and the WA4WDA are recognised by land managers as the two peak bodies of four wheel driving in Western Australia.
We are the largest 4wd community in Western Australia representing all responsible 4wd interests for the purpose of sustainable recreational 4wding.

The Australian National Four Wheel Drive Council, Track Care WA Inc and WA 4WD Association Inc - UNITED are the voice to Commonwealth, State and Local Governments.

The more members the greater influence on Government decisions we will have.

I am the Trip Coordinator for my Club here in WA (4WD Club of WA) and have been a member of a few clubs all around Aust over the years.

4WD Clubs (and any Club for that matter) are like any organisation - some are good and some are bad (i.e politics, clicks etc) but at the end of the day, you get out of a Club what you put into it.

I have been (and am still) a member of many forums and Facebook groups for my various activities that I enjoy (scuba diving, photography, 4WD & camping etc) and find that they too are exactly like Clubs but without formal membership, committees and constitutions.    Again, you get out of them what you put in.

I no longer organize trips for any of the forum / FB groups that I belong to (however, I do attend them) - why:

1.   Insurance - it is a very grey area in regards to insurance should something happen on a trip I organise (note this is non Club related stuff) and far too complicated to discuss here as to legalities so I now err on the safe side and don't organise anything.   With a Club activity at least they have Public Liability insurance and access to good advice.

2.   Control - when I have organised non Club based activities I have no control over who turns up or their behavior - a point in case a few years ago I organised a day trip down south for a forum of a particular make of vehicle and I had two guys turn up in one vehicle with three kids - great it was a family day out.   From the time they arrived until the trip ended they never had a beer out of their hands and by the afternoon the driver would have been well over the limit, their language and behavior around the others was very poor and when I tried to talk to them about it they became aggressive and stated "you can't tell us what to do" and left me in a very bad and precarious position.   It spoilt the day for everyone.   At least with a Club you can have them removed but you can't stop them on the internet - after this I never organised another trip.

Good clubs have good committees and are well run - if you don't like what a committee is doing run for a position and change it.

Don't join the first club you come across - go to several and attend their meetings and do a trip with them as this is a good way to see what they are like.   It's like a marriage - you never (or rarely) marry the first girl you date and sometimes that marriage doesn't work but keep trying and you will find a club for you.

A good Club will give you access to good training and social activities as well as like minded people wanting to do the same as you.

A good forum (like this one) also does the same but without the formalities and it has been around a long time so it has a winning formula but many forums and FB Groups don't last and it only takes a couple of idiots to wreck them.

Anyway, this is a free country (well sort of) and we can all make our own choices in life so go with whatever suits you.

BTW if anyone is interested I will be at our Club stand at the 4WD & Camping Show in Perth next week on Sat morning, drop by and say hello.
