Tyre Safety
« on: February 29, 2016, 12:54:45 PM »
Had a tyre blowout at approx 100km/hr in the Vista. No drama and Vista SsangYong combo behaved impeccably. Tyre was Coopers. Tyre people at Coonabarrabran were excellent. The tyre had separated and delaminated. When checked carefully the other one was about to do the same. The tread on the tyres looked to have more than 50% left and 'looked' OK. The reality however was different.
Tyre people said 5yrs is the maximum life of a tyre used on camper/caravan irrespective of ks covered or external appearances.
To my mind now, that appears to be excellent advice.

I thought 10 years was the maximum tyre life, not sure how a camper tyre life would differ to the life on a car.
Glad you were able to ride it out and stop safely.
Some more data on why a camper is only 5 years might stop a few questions here!!!!!!!!

I think you will find the tyre industry specifies tyre life of 7 years.
Campers and vehicles that sit in one spot for extended periods can have a lesser life as that contributes to separation issues.
Upon advice many moons ago I now put my caravans and boat trailers up on axle stands when not in regular use.
The inconvenience is outweighed by the extended tyre life.
Also wise to cover tyres to avoid damage to the rubber  from prolonged exposure to the sun.

Any tyre  over 5 years if you are travelling long distances from  my experience you need to change no matter what condition you think they are in.

I had a front tyre blow in the NT at 130 last year (state limit) in my son's Hyundai Getz when I was taking it down to him in Brisbane. Tread delaminated and separated flapping around, denting the sill ripping out the plastic inner guard, ruling the front guard and ripping the fron bumper. a lot of damage. I thank god I was driving at the time and not my youngest son who was on his L's the result could have been very different.

This happened abount 80 km short of three ways. By the time
I got to three ways driving a lot slower  I knew my other tyres had started to delaminate as the car was skating around.

Tyres were in good condition and I had them checked twice because I was concerned (by a mechanic and tyre place and they both advised I would be fine). I should have listened to my gut in hind site and bought new ones.

One insurance claim later to fix the damage, 5 new tyres purchased from Tennant creek on Easter Thursday afternoon at 1730 I was lucky not to be stranded in Tennant Creek for the Easter weekend. Car was still drivable luckily and we made it to Brisbane without further incident.

Then  had to organise to have the car fixed under insurance.

The result below. :o

BFG and cooper also add a compound that makes the tire go hard after a couple of years hence people get loads of kms out of them but you loose a lot of performance after the first couple of years I was warned off those two brands by my tyre guy for my camper for that reason got softer rubber (federal corougia mt) which I won't get as many kms out of which doesn't matter as the camper won't do as many ks as the car but will retain its performance over time.

Age may well be a factor, but it is not the first time I have heard of a Cooper delaminating.

It is more prevalent in van and camper tires as it is the Carbon Black a bonding agent that fails prematurely. Carbon black needs to be heated regularly to keep its elasticity. You get this regular heating on a car as it is driven most days and as the tyre flexes on the road this generates said heat.

I am not sure if connected or not but cooper tyres being us made are designed for the US roads which a lot are concrete requiring a much harder compound to get the same tread life

Michelin say 10 years is max, but should be inspected yearly after 5 years

On my way back from Cardwell yesterday l pulled over to help a guy who's Caravan tyre had delaminated. It had torn a nice size hole up into the sink cupboard.
I went around to check the other side and yep another few ks and the same would have happened.
He told me they were almost 4 years old but the van has only done around 3,000 ks.

Years ago I had an old Land Rover that I kept on Moreton Island.
I hadn't used it for around 7 months & when I finally got over for a visit, on the third or fourth day I was on the Eastern beach & at about 80 kph one of the rear tyres started to delaminate. I limped back to the servo at Bulwer (no spare), borrowed an old tyre from Eddie Williams, got home & found weak spots (smallish bubbles in the walls) in the remaining tyres.
I still got a few more trips out of them at low cruise speed.
Learnt from that not to leave any vehicle sitting for long periods as the tyres get "flat spots" I reckon & that's where the delam starts.
Tyres were 3-4 year old Bridgestone Duelers with 99.9% tread as only driven on sand.

I have been thinking about buying a tyre monitor (Safe T Tyres) and wondering if one of these devices would pick up this tyre failure?  I guess it should pick up the change in temps?   Kevin

Here's whats left of the front right tyre on my boat trailer. 2.7 ton loaded up.
Lost it in the dark and didn't hear or feel it go!

I am guessing I lost pressure, it got hot and completely failed but the tyres are now over 5 years old so I will be watching the remainders very closely.
