Prado noise
« on: February 21, 2016, 09:46:45 PM »
Hi all

I've recently bought a 2006 120 series prado.
When I go over small bumps there's a thump that comes from the rear.
We thought I was seats there gone still the noise is still there, we've checked the rear door doesn't
Seem to be that . Has anyone had this problem ??????
I replaced the shockies Friday hoping that would help. Nope.

Cheers Tony.

Exhaust under the car, transmitting the noise into the car maybe?

Tony - not sure if this is common to the 120's but in the 150's a common issue as you described is the little plastic guide (black V shaped plastic) for the rear door wears and creates an annoying rattling  clunking type of noise.   Maybe worth checking out as it's a low cost item and if this does the trick for you - you'll be sorted.  To see - just wedge some paper in and go for a drive and see if this is the one?

It's not the Jack loose in its compartment?  The 120's have them in the rear passenger side and there's room for vertical movement or sideways if the rubber strap isn't connected. After I put mine in I wind it up slightly to hold it firmly in place.

Check the tools in the rear door too

As above the Jack is a common culprit on the 120's

Without being able to hear it makes it bit hard to track down .. also the condition of the truck etc .. Could check the chassis to body mount bushes for wear / movement ? movement in trailing arm bushes  etc, spare tire and carrier mounts movement  .
Not sure if it would be the case with this one but some cars have a fuel tank small vent bottle in the rear quarter panel that can come loose and flop around ??

It will be this, I had the same issue, replaced it (cheap, below $30.00) noise has gone.

Also, check your tow hitch, this to can make a noise.

And I know you checked your door, but the hinges let go to easy, try only to just open the door ajar and hold it at the bottom and try moving it up and down, if there is play, that's your noise. Do this in an arc until fully open, just to be sure.

After much stuffing about.
The rear door one first prize.
There's no visible movement when it's closed
So put a piece of cardboard into the locator on the door and closed it then went for a quick drive to quindanning (140kms) and back not a thump bang or anything coming from the rear.
The locator thingy looks ok could it be door sag causing it. ???????

Hi Tony
Try checking the rubber bump stops for the door they are usually just rubber with a coil thread in them and can wound in and out by hand to keep pressure on the catch to stop the door rattling
Worth a look

There have been a few warranty claims for Prado tailgates cracking near the hinges. If you find anything like that visit your dealer, they will get a new one under warranty, new for free is always good. I say cracking but I think it's welds separating.

If the door has sagged: It's a quick fix with some washers under the hinge bolts on the frame side

Glad you got it sorted. Random rattles and noises drive me nuts.
