Spinflo 2 burner with grill - Camp-O-Matic 1999
« on: January 25, 2016, 06:34:21 PM »
Hope someone can help with info on the hob, as described. I bought the camper second hand and, not surprisingly, it didn't come with manual(s) for anything.
I would like to know if this model hob came with an electronic sparked, or manual piezo. There appears to be electrodes sticking up beside the burner, but pressing down and turning the gas knobs doesn't result in a spark. Would also appreciate a copy (PDF format) of any manuals for the 1999 Camp/O/Matic Ranger GL.

Thanks.

Have you looked underneath for signs of a piezo and/or a spot for a battery ? Follow the wire from the electrode sticking up....shouldn't be hard to suss out !

I've got a Spinflo 4 burner with grill that looks very similar. It's a manual light job

I'm going to replace it with a 2 or 3 burner but $500 is hard to justify

By the look at the photo the "thing" sticking up is the thermocouple, which is a gas safety feature ensures the gas is unable to flow unless the burner is functioning, ie burning

Bit hard to tell....on my burners ( different brand ) the ignitor is covered in a white ceramic covering ( like the photo ) where as the thermocouple is just brass ??

No wiring under hob, and a closer look, with natural light, does show these to be probes rather than piezo ignitors. Thanks ALL for your input.
Would still appreciate copies of any documentation, owners manual etc, that may be available through the forum.

A search for Spinflo gas hob manual only comes up with Mk3 version (covers hob and stove) and here's the rub with the hob which should answer your question-

Using the Hotplate Gas Burners
1. Ensure gas cylinder/supply is connected and turned on. In the event of a gas smell turn
off at gas cylinder/mains and contact supplier.
2. Flame supervision: Each burner is controlled individually and is monitored by a
thermocouple probe. In the event of the burner flames being accidentally extinguished,
turn off the burner control and do not attempt to re-ignite the burner for at least one
minute.
3. To light: Push in the control knob and turn to full rate – see Fig.2. Hold a lighted match
or taper to the burner and push the control knob in and hold. It is necessary to hold the
knob depressed after the burner has ignited for approximately 10 - 15 seconds, to
allow the thermocouple probe to reach temperature, before releasing the knob. Should
the flame go out when the knob is released, the procedure should be repeated holding
the knob depressed for slightly longer.
4. For models fitted with Spark Ignition the procedure is similar except that the burner can
be ignited by depressing the ignition button, which is located on the fascia. If the burner
has not lit within 15 seconds the control knob should be released and the burner left for
at least 1 minute before a further attempt to ignite the burner.
5. For simmering, turn the knob further anti-clockwise to the low rate position.
6. To turn off: Turn the control knob until the line on the control knob is aligned with the
dot on the control panel. Always make sure the control knob is in the off position when
you have finished using the hotplate burners.

PS: Apart from that and the usual care with gas appliances the other thing you need to be aware of is the gas safety shutoff/isolator like that fitted to the glass lid of my Jayco hob. When it's open for cooking it's close to the canvas sidewall it protects and should the wind be blowing the canvas can push it forward enough to shut off the gas, which is why there's a small swivel catch (like those to hold aluminium flyscreens in place) to hold it back near the hinge at the bottom of the glass. That makes me nervous too if you know your law of levers and someone onboard doesn't.

These are manual light jobs. The small electrodes sticking up next to the burners are actually part of the gas cut off safety device. By having to push down to light the gas you are bypassing the safety switch until the electrode (BiMetal strip) heats us so the flame stays alight when you let the button go.

Should the flame blow out the electrode cools very quickly and closes a cct. which in turn cuts off the gas.

If therefore, you ever have trouble with the flame going out once you let go of the button the most likely fault will be in this part of the unit. Most times the problem is the electrode get rust and grime under it and is no longer earthed to the frame, remove and clean first. Easy to do but expensive to replace.

Hope this helps

Thanks guys, all good information, especially the method for lighting the little buggers. It seemed a bit hit and miss to me, but having specific information re timing of release makes a big difference  :D
Cheers

Helps to know what your particular gear is all about and I had some empathy for you after scratching my head with the intermittent gas problem on our update Jayco before I worked out that gas safety shutoff deal with the glass lid. Our earlier Jayco had no such thing but I was fortunate to get every handbook and manual for the current one from a fastidious previous owner.  As they say- when in doubt read the flaming instructions stoopids!  :-[
