Changing Pool Pump to Tarriff 33
« on: January 25, 2016, 08:55:57 AM »
What would one expect to pay (high to low) for changing a pool pump to Tarriff 33 in Brisbane area. Meter box was upgraded 18 months ago (expensive job) and the distance from the box to the pump socket is approximately 12 metres. Access is very straightforward consequently running the cable is easy.

G'day Uiz

We did this a few years ago (8/2012) & it was a pretty simple job.

Our pool stuff was on a seperate circuit / fuse in the fusebox & the sparky just swapped that circuit across from Tariff 11 to 33 without doing any physical running of cables etc. Off top of head it was only $200'ish  ???

Also, the Energex scheme to pay you back for doing this has been extended till June 2016 so make sure you put in for that:
https://www.energex.com.au/residential-and-business/positive-payback/positive-payback-for-households/pool-rewards-program. That's worth $200 so our's was either that amount or we may have been out of pocket $50?

What do they charge for this tariff 33 ?  Aahh, found it...18 cents per kwh.

In NSW, I have a smart meter and my off peak times are 10pm to 7am, so my pool pump runs during the night...11.4 cents per kwh.

Qld seem to do stuff similar to the old demand water heater stuff ?

based on the first full qtr account I'm expecting a 4 year payback so 0.00 per kwh in 3 years 9 months time!

We are well on track to pay for our solar in less than 8 years. It has been over 4 years now and the system is humming along brilliantly.
We have the pool on Tarif 33, run the pool during the day so most days it runs for free. I think $250-400 is a fare budget for the changeover going by what you described.

If the tarriff 33 is an off peak GPO, how do you set a timer for the pool pump ? How do you set it to only work for say 5 hrs a day ?

Get a plug in timer that runs on batteries that charge when power is on. Got one from bunnings fir about $20 i think. Works well

The tariff 33 circuit breaker has a timer on it. It's one of those timers on a rotating dial that you can click when it's on or off.  The pool pump and chlorinatar are simply plugged in to a normal 240v GPO that are always switched on.

Simple system, works for me.

I have one on my solar pump. I was more asking does the tarriff 33 come on for 5,6 or 8 hrs during the day or does it turn off if peak load comes on ?

Why not connect to tarriff 31, seeing as it's cheaper again ?? Or install a smart meter, which is cheaper again ??

You export at 44c.......but take off any elect that you use....fridge, washing machine etc !

If you had a pool on tarriff 33...at 18c....you would theoretically export at 44c, but still pay 18c.

If you had a smart meter and ran the pool at night, you would export during the day at 44c ( of course minus whatever gets used during the day ), but only pay 11c during the night !

AGL in NSW now only offer 5.1c/kwh for feed in tarriff , so you would need a big system to 100% offset your power bill !!

I have a smart meter. I think a smart meter is necessary/required when a grid tied solar system is correctly installed.

I'm not sure how it works in NSW,  but here in NQ my understanding is that tariff 33 is 18hrs guaranteed supply with the only definite off cycle being 5-7pm. Outside that ergon control the peak loads. Dont know about tariff 31 but imagine similar setup.
I thought with solar you had to use what you generate first & then export to grid?

Tariff 33 is depending on your area not available  6:50 to 8:20 in the morning and from around  5:30 to 9 in the evening. The Ergon site link attached covers those outside the greater Brisbane areas in qld.
https://www.ergon.com.au/retail/residential/tariffs-and-prices/economy-tariffs/pool-pumps-and-other-appliances.

Tariff 31 is only for hot water and is 8 hours minimum supply usually from 10pm to 7am.

As to the OP not sure on the costs.

100% correct

Those that receive a nice FIT will use heavy load power at night eg:pool pumps, washing machines etc.
Those who receive next to nil FIT will use their solar generated power during the day.

If you put the pool pump circuit on off-peak, can you still the run the pump during the day if you need to, for cleaning? Or do you have to run an extension cord out for that?

This Qld off peak ( tariff 33 ) runs during the day, so yes you could clean it.

In NSW , with a smart meter, you can run anything whenever you like, but to get cheap tariffs, you run everything you can during off peak times.

To answer a few questions.
Our pool pump is connected to tariff 33. In my area it is available for approx 18 hours per day. For me, it is not available between 0650-0820 and 1750-1930.  When is comes to cleaning, you can't access power during these times and you would have to run an extension chord from a normal supply. I normally clean the pool during the times that it is available.

I sometimes run the pool via extension chord if I have a late arvo/night time pool party with a lot of people in the pool.  My pool (salt water) is on if there are 4 or more people in the pool (my rule of thumb).

Tariff 33 is approx 14 cents per KWh and normal tariff is approx 25 cents per kWh. We feed back in the grid at 44 cents per kWh.

Normal Qld tariff is 25c/kwh and tariff 33 is 20.7c/kwh...that's off an Origin website.

NSW with a smart meter is heaps higher if you use during peak times....peak, 50.6.....shoulder, 20.2 and off peak, 11.4.

NSW normal type elect plan.....all approx 22c/kwh.

Feeding back in at 44c was great when it was available.   How do they pay your excess production ? Via credit to your account or money into your bank ?

My mistake, apologies,  I was looking at the wrong bit on the bill. Tariff 33 is 20.7 cents. We are with Ergon not Origin. Excess is paid as credit in to the account.

Say you always were ahead with the solar, wouldn't the credit get higher and higher ? Say after 4 yrs the credit was $2,000....you wouldn't ever reap the dollars being made ? Sure, the elect bill would be zero, but you wouldn't get paid for the extra solar ?

I think at some point you have to ask your retailer for a cheque or bank deposit.
