R.I.P. Common sense
« on: January 23, 2016, 07:44:24 AM »
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as:
- Knowing when to come in out of the rain;
- Why the early bird gets the worm;
- Life isn't always fair;
- And maybe it was my fault.

Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.
It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.
Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death,
-by his parents, Truth and Trust,
-by his wife, Discretion,
-by his daughter, Responsibility,
-and by his son, Reason.
He is survived by his 5 stepbrothers;
- I Know My Rights
- I Want It Now
- Someone Else Is To Blame
- I'm A Victim
- Pay me for Doing Nothing
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.
If you still remember him, pass this on.
If not, join the majority and do nothing :worthles:
The dream - to travel like a snail with my home behind me, seeing every inch of Australia.

Life is a gift and too short to waste.

Common sense, is, and always has been, a fallacy.  It is a delusion created by the uniformed to justify their prejudices.

The lamenting of what was supposedly common sense is actually more of an ode to the loss of personal accountability, which is a legacy left by a few continuously progressive generations.

It should be called uncommon sense.

If it was common, then everyone should have it.

The lamenting of what was supposedly common sense is actually more of an ode to the loss of personal accountability, which is a legacy left by a few continuously progressive generations.

I'm afraid this is 100% correct. It is the common sense mantra that made up my mind to leave the safety industry. I got sick of sitting in the homes of the loudest chanters of the "common sense" myth trying to figure how they will manage their normal day to day lives now that their "common sense" had left them for a moment and they were injured enough to change their lives either for a short duration or for the rest of their days.

Generally an investigation of what went wrong showed that they made a poor choice at a given moment in time.  (I'm not saying this in 100% of cases but up around 80% mark)

I consider myself to be reasonably sensible person (probably plenty who would argue otherwise) but I know I have done things that later when I think of all the choices I had I do not have valid reason for, "why the hell did I do that" and wondered that maybe I don't have common sense ;D

I've always questioned the definition of common sense & I suggest that it is a learned value not an inherited one. For example what would be common sense to a brain surgeon during an operation would not be to an electrician and visa versa.

I don't aim to offend nor have I ever tried to tell someone how to their job unless it was within my sphere of knowledge & they asked for my opinion and no I wasn't university educated. (Struggled to get through grade 10)

Sorry this should be its own rant thread.

This is exactly the reason why the concept of 'common sense' is just misguided nostalgia with a smattering of hyperbole.  What you know is based on your life experience, it is unreasonable for others to assume that you know as much as they do about any particular topic.  There are instincts of course, but considering in what context of people claim 'common sense' I think it can be safely excluded from that classification.

Some learned definitions form leading dictionaries;

1. The definition of common sense refers to having sound judgment, not necessarily based on specialized knowledge.

2. Simple Definition of common sense: the ability to think and behave in a reasonable way and to make good decisions.

3. Good sense and sound judgement in practical matters.

4. the ability to use good judgment and make sensible decisions.

Seems to be lots of similar definitions online for something that doesn't exist.
But of course we all know you can't trust what you read online.

I have no problems with those definitions unfortunately  the words common sense are generally not used in that context.

To often I saw people who were injured & were blamed for not having common sense where as what they were missing was common knowledge & fellow workers, supervisors etc used the common sense angle to mitigate their failures to make sure people had the knowledge to do their work. Trust me the courts aren't interested in the term.

However as I now am employed to do my hobbies I don't know why I am sitting here instead of watching the cricket or tinkering in the shed.

Whatever floats your boat take care & stay safe if not for your own sake then for those that will be touched if you don't.

PS RIP Common Sense whatever the hell it means to you.

There are also definitions for fairies and unicorns.  Does not mean that they exist.

I think you might find the word mythical used in acceptable definitions for those two entities.

Does that mean they exist?

NO, however many in mind altered states have reportedly had encounters with them.

You don't have to go into mind altered states, just go into the wrong pub and you'll meet some of them.... well maybe not the unicorns...

The new and powerful player on the block is "Political Correctness"

You are continually assailed by this insidious and unforgiving mongrel.

Dare to speak your mind, question a woman's rights or abilities (even logical strength questions) at your own demise.
Never mention race, colour, sex, sexuality or beliefs.
Any deviation from the accepted demasculated male role model is punished severly and never, ever open a door for a woman.

And women dont have it all either, gone are the days of gossip, legal and sever punishment is the result.
Daring to be a woman and relishing your femininity is forbidden, you must be a pseudo male to survive.
Decrying the feminatzi is the most sever crime that can be committed, and your punishment is all and forever.

Finally, race and religion.
Two separate, but for those wishing to profit from the amalgamation, related conditions.
Its OK to poke fun at Christians as we are the ones who have no say or teeth.
But some religions cannot be questioned, or even degenerated with the disregard given to Christians.

Yes political Correctness has us all under his thumb.
We dare not stray, we dare not deviate.
This will be the downfall of our culture, our way of life, what life is left after all the continual criticism and punishment.
This is our world..............live it in fear.

The new and powerful player on the block is "Political Correctness"

You are continually assailed by this insidious and unforgiving mongrel.
It's called fairness and equality for everyone.

Dare to speak your mind, question a woman's rights or abilities (even logical strength questions) at your own demise.
If it's done in an insulting and bullying manner, then siad demise is justified.
Never mention race, colour, sex, sexuality or beliefs.
Again, if it is done in an insulting or bullying manner (which is usually the case), you're right, don't do it.

Any deviation from the accepted demasculated male role model is punished severly and never, ever open a door for a woman.
The word is "emasculated", and is usually bandied about when someone stands up to the bullying tactics of said male.

And women dont have it all either, gone are the days of gossip, legal and sever punishment is the result.
Which is what should happen in cases of slander or defamation.

Daring to be a woman and relishing your femininity is forbidden, you must be a pseudo male to survive.
Decrying the feminatzi is the most sever crime that can be committed, and your punishment is all and forever.
If you feel you aren't being allowed to show your feminine side, stand up for yourself, I'm sure most here would support you.
(but we don't need to see pictures OK) :-[

Finally, race and religion.
Two separate, but for those wishing to profit from the amalgamation, related conditions.
Its OK to poke fun at Christians as we are the ones who have no say or teeth.
It's not OK to denigrate any religion. It's called bigotry. You may not agree with followers of other religions, but they have the right to follow their own beliefs as long as it is not to the detriment of others beliefs or well being.

But some religions cannot be questioned, or even degenerated with the disregard given to Christians.
I don't know what this sentence means.  ???

Yes political Correctness has us all under his thumb.
We dare not stray, we dare not deviate.
This will be the downfall of our culture, our way of life, what life is left after all the continual criticism and punishment.
If your "culture" is being a bigoted, sexist, racist bully, then yes it is the "downfall of your culture"
This is our world..............live it in fear.
There doesn't seem to be an "eyes rolling" emoticon  ???

never, ever open a door for a woman.

Was told a story of this but not sure how fair dinkum it is, however at a posh function male opened door for female who said she is ascapable as any man and can open her own doors (or words to that effect) then spat on the bloke. His response, this is what I would do to any man that spat on me & knocked her on her rrrs.  :cup:
