Best free camping along the Old Telegraph Track, Cape York
« on: January 21, 2016, 09:43:24 AM »
Hi Everyone,
Heading up the Cape this year and all the NP campsites are booked at Elliot Falls. Any advice on good places to camp along the track and those to avoid would be appreciated. We are taking four days to do the track.

Thanks

Shane

I could nearly bet that if the Elliot Falls sites are all booked out, that all of the popular camping spots are going to be crowded.

It will be a suck it and see type of trip,

Dulhunty Creek , a fairly easy run from the Archer River Road house in one day. Quite a few camping spots but will be busy in school holidays. Lovely creek to swim in.

Canal Creek. Is close to the Twin Falls, Elliot Falls and Indian Head Falls. And again a easy run in one day to get there from Dalhunty.
Camping spots on both sides of the creek. Great spot for a two night stop over , as you need a full day to enjoy the falls .

Nolan’s Creek . Another great spot for camping, plenty of room but again all these sites are very crowded during the school holidays. from Nolan's it is an easy run to the tip in one day.

I have listed a few great spots, and there are many more good spots along the way. Basically if you can find  spot to camp grab it as the next site may be full.

There was a really nice spot just before you hit Bertie creek you turn left and comes to a fairly open area right on the bank of the creek. bertie is the one just north of Dalhunty

I took that turn by mistake and found it, there was an older couple there enjoying the whole are to themselves..

Shane,

There are several stone quarries that are used for the roads, choose one on the Eastern side [due to the wind] pretty sure there was one either side of the turn off to Eliot within a K or so.

Maybe McGirr might remember

Plusnq, mate camp sites are just a bonus - where ever you find your self you are going to be happy. Just relax, drink beer and have a great time. You will meet, great people every where, regardless of where you stop. Cheers

Nearly all creek crossings have spots to camp free at. Get there early each day to beat the crowds.

As mentioned Dulhunty creek is a great spot. Happy to chat anytime. Send me a pm.
