Faulty ProQuip caps

Just a warning to members who may have purchased the 5Ltr proquip plastic
fuel containers.

I purchased a couple of these containers just before Christmas, normally I store my
fuel containers in the garden shed but as I have purchased more and more petrol powered
tools have recently decided to store them in the garage. There was a nice spot under the
ducted vacuum where they could live but ldecided not a good idea and put them on the other
side of the gargare.

A couple of days ago went out to the garage and smelt petrol, on investigating found both
containers to be swollen and a pool of petrol around one. On investigating found the plastic
cap had split on one of the containers. These containers have a pouring spout which is stored
in the container, the plastic spout has a seal on it, you insert it into the container and then
screw on the plastic cap to seal it. This arrangement allowed the pressure in the container to
force fuel up the spout and then through the crack in the cap resulting in a puddle of fuel.

On contacing Proquip I was told that they had a faulty batch of caps last year and recalled the
the containers, I did a search and the only recall info I could find was on their website. If you
have purchased one of these cans in the last 12 months or so I would visit their web site
and see if your container is fitted with the defective cap.

I had two of the 20l Diesel ones that split around the top of the cap in November - Just after I filled them and put them back in the boot of the Discovery :-(

Thankfully a pile of gaffa tape sealed them well enough not to leak.  When I got home I jumped online to get their contact details to complain and to my surprise found there was already a recall on them.  One email with a couple of photo's and I had new caps within three days.  Pretty impressed with the service.

We have notices of this in all our stores.
The notices are posted right where you walk in the door and right where the jerry cans are on display.
We have spare caps for customers that may have purchased a faulty jerry can or if they prefer we swap the entire jerry can.
By law all retailers should have these notices posted in the areas I mentioned.

Well certainly didn't in the supercheap I purchased them at, there is also the question
of why was faulty stock still on the shelf just before Christmas?

I would also have thought they would have contacted club customers who have purchased
the product and asked them to return them?

Same here.
Filled it up at the servo, put it in the back of the ute to go home, and by the time I got home there was fuel running out of the tray. It was a hot day.
Cap had split as you say. I just thought I must have been unlucky and got one that was broken in transport. Didn't bother taking it back as I was pretty pissed off at the time. Just threw it in the shed.

Might dig it out and take the cap back to Supercrap and get a new one.

Considering the innitial notice happenend nearly 12 months ago Im surprised any store still has bad jerry cans left on the shelf.I would have thought they would have sold through them by now.
The paper work we received along with replacment caps told us which batch numbers needed the caps replaced.
Therefore we replaced the caps immediatly and all stock remained on the shelf. ( Im only speaking for the 3 shops I work in, not all stores)
All Club Plus members who purchased the jerry cans were notified via email over 12 months ago when the notice came through to us. They we asked to return the jerry cans for new caps or new cans whichever they prefered.Since all stock should have been immediatly rectified in store only the 1 email was necessary.
As to why you got a defective one just this week is beyond me. Perhaps it was old stock and someone forgot to check the cap, or perhaps they misread the batch numbers. We do try our best but being only human we make the occasional mistake.
But by all means return it Super Cheap for a new cap or jerry can.
