Heating?

Hey guys?

Just wanted to get an idea of what you are using for heating if any, in your campers when out bush?

I just purchased one of these and was after some thoughts.

Search for diesel heaters....

I usually find good bedding is good enough.

Absolutely agree with the comments above.....

We had a Diesel heater in our previous Expanda and they are the ducks nuts. Extremely simple to operate and blast out a ton of warm air. And very safe too which is important. Have a check on Ebay and you will find some you can install yourself if you are reasonably handy. Its not very hard.  :cheers:

Open gas fire inside a canvas walled structure !   ??? ???

Gas fire goes out, gas still leaking into sleeping area !  ??? ???

 Build up of carbon dioxide/monoxide from the gas fire !  ??? ???

Need I say more.

There have been a few fatalities as a result of using heaters of this nature in small spaces such as campers and caravans. Not recommended.

This unit has some safety device that cuts the gas should anything happen. I have heard and witnessed many caravan users ignite their stove tops to keep their vans warm.

I guess safety is the main concern.

It will also consume oxygen as well as producing CO.
Gas or diesel heating has seperate fuel burning  (ducted outside) and warm air (internal) systems with safety devices built in.

I use a portable gas heater to warm the tent for 15 min before bed.  I never have it on when anyone is in the camper. I Remove it when the tent is warm and time for bed. Then I rely on the electric blanket. Camping doesn't necessarily mean you have to rough it.

Of course not......but a good doona and flanno sheets are as good as any elect blanket.

We at least wear a tee shirt to bed in winter and the 10 secs of cold that it takes to get into bed isn't a problem for us old folk !!  :-*

I was in a caravan in Glen Innes DEC 28th.....   $@&£? freeezing overnight @ 8 degrees c.....   Wished I had some heating atm....   freakn redicilious

You didn't have warm bedding then.....8deg is nice sleeping weather.

Anything less than 4deg is cold, but with a good doona you'd be warm as toast !!

Been camping in minus 4deg and still nice and warm in bed,  but sure hard to leave the campfire though.

One thing a lot of people forget but has been discussed on here numerous times is that they forget to insulate the bottom of the bed from the cold. A lot of cold comes up from underneath if not properly insulated. No matter how many layers you have on top if cold can come up you will stay cold all night.

....and closing all hatches/doors on the trailer also helps a lot.....

If you are going to use it for some peace of mind you could insatall a carbon monoxide detector and a gas detector. The carbon one is mounted high and the gas low.

At least you'll get an alarm if either levels are detected at dangerous levels.

The main heating I use is my lovely lady. I am not sure what would be more dangerous her or an open gas flame. Seriously don't use the gas heater in a confined space you might not wake up again

It is believed this invisible killer claimed the lives of a young Sydney couple as they holidayed in the Blue Mountains at the weekend.
The pair had been staying in a makeshift cabin overlooking Days Gulley and had used a wood chip heater to keep warm as temperatures dropped overnight.
The tragedy has been a painful reminder for Vanessa Robinson, who lost her two sons to the silent killer just over five years ago.
Chase, 8, and Tyler, 6, were sleeping with their mother in her bed when they inhaled the deadly fumes from a leaking gas heater in their Victorian home in 2010.
Ms Robinson told news.com.au that every time she heard of another carbon monoxide death, she was reminded of what she lost, and also how preventable the latest deaths could have been.
“Sometimes it still just hits me that I can’t believe that my children have died because of a gas heater,” she said. “It’s hard to wrap your head around."

True - being Queenslanders....    we had no idea that parts of Oz could be as cold as that in the middle of December. ...    (excluding Alpine areas; and Tassie etc....).

The day before our BNE departure we just happened to mention to one of our suppliers that we would be spending Christmas near Armidale ...  when he said  hmm...  "better pack a coat...."   We just looked at him and thought  .. "What the @#%¥"....   But luckily for us we did at least pack a couple of coats - thanks to his tip....

Now we are waiting for the Aldi sale on WED  to buy some bedding stuff -- permanently for the van....

The van had no heating; doonas; flannos; etc....
