Roof Top Cargo Bag, who has one.

I have decided to get a roof top cargo bag to make it easier when traveling.

Who has what and is canvas the best, also any one looking at selling one. The size I need is 1700mm long by 1000mm wide and 450mm high. I carry a space case box, tables and other light stuff on the roof.

I have a Rhino bag, size medium. It appears to be made out of some hybrid canvas as the back feels plasticy/rubbery. I've used it rain, hail and shine and it hasn't let any water or dust in. Big overlaps with Velcro to cover the zips and sewn in straps to cinch it/secure it seem to work well.

I know of a Southern Cross bag for sale, I didn't buy it as I already had one.

I have owned 2 of them (still have one).... the first was a Bushranger brand which was canvas type material, leaked heaps and wore holes through the bottom of the bag from rubbing on the roofrack on it's first decent corrugated road outing. Second is a MSA brand, made from a bit different type material and has a really thick rubber used as it's base, also has an extra top lining to help keep water it proof...great bag that has survived a heap of corrugations pretty much unmarked, though doing up all the buckles and straps it has daily is a pain if on top of a 3" lifted Landcruiser.

We have a rhino bag also. Works well, keeps dust And water out. As mentioned doing up the buckles each day is a pita, especially if like me you never pack the same way twice! Is great for chairs, clothes bags, pillows etc.
I had the same experience with the bushranger bag, wore holes in it and it did let some water in.

Mines a relic from before they were available commercially. I designed it and the original guys down at trackabout sewed it.
It has zips on three sides, and shock cord through loops over that. The roof rack has torneau buttons on it to match.  The bag gets filled with all the odd shaped gear, zipped closed, and the shock cord cinches it all down evenly no matter what shape the load.
Being all canvas, I put the foam shower mats under it and in it to protect from rubbing through. I had it made before 2000, and it's seen plenty of work since. The ones with the hard plastic bases are a step ahead again.

recently brought a rhino bag large 1500x1100x300 sits on the front of our FF with all the canvas in plenty of room left in the bag for other stuff.

We have had a large Rhino bag for many years. The only time it has leaked was when we had to drive in cyclonic rain for three hours and some water managed to force its way in. The conditions were terrible though.

I will stay away from the bushranger brand.

This my current setup with a tarp and cargo net which is a real pain.

I've got one of the older style Bushranger bags, made of an Orange vinyl material. Tough as nails and totally weather proof. Unfortunately they don't make this type any more.

Mark My experience was exactly the same as Rumpigs. The MSA is durable, doesn't leak and the zipp has never jammed.

I bought a cheapie from ebay a few years ago, only used it a few times but has been okay, it did get some moisture in when we drove through several hours of heavy rain but had it backwards so I suspect it came in through the zipper ,it does have a waterproof backing on the inside of the material that I think would rub of if left between two hard surfaces or left to flap against something hard, for the $70 I paid for it I wont complain. looks to be the same as this one. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/LARGE-155x105x45CM-ROOF-RACK-LUGGAGE-STORAGE-BAG-WEATHERPROOF-BNE-STOCK-/131600770657?hash=item1ea4046661:g:r1wAAOSw5dNWhXeX

Thanks for the reminder.

I have a rhino bag that was used for one 2 week trip 8 years ago then stored in the original box in the shed.

I used it again last July for a 5000k round trip and it fell apart. Even with all the buckles tight it flogged to death coming over the Nullarbor.

Box says life time warranty, need to try it out.

I have a heavy canvas bag made by a friend (she used to work for Southern Cross Canvas before going out on her own.)   It is heavy canvas and about 1.2 x 1.2m and as high as the rails on the roof rack with a zipper on three sides.   
One issue to be wary of with this style is that when it's not fully packed it dips in the middle and collects water when it rains.   When that happens it can get wet inside.

HI Mark,
I tried everything (custom ones etc) they all sit on the car everyday rain, hail, shine, dust and everything else.

As D4D said the Rhino (which i know have) is by far the best. No dust etc. However i am getting a little water in mine, which might be because of condensation more then anything..

Otherwise when i replace this one it will be another rhino.

I did have a guy make a special sleeve for the RV-4 its out of a rubber canvas but i have to put the seam at the bottom when on the roof, and the back is velcro extra long that i double over a couple of times.. He also did double stiching with a double rubber over the original sticking at the front to seal it up. It works great to keep the Oztent dry.

But the rhino is working the best out of all the bags.

I also have a Rhino bag which I find to be pretty good.

Material is pretty heavy duty as are the zips a velcro. Never had it leak or had any other problems. Only store soft cargo in it such as clothes bags, pillows and sleeping bags. Glued some cut up rubber matting to the roof tray to protect from rubbing against the bag. Secure it to the tray with a couple of straps to compliment the fixed straps/buckles.

Can recommend these bags.

I've got one of the cheap adventure kings ones from 4wd supacentre that came with my roof cage, used it a couple times and haven't had any issues with it but I only put stuff up there that I wasn't worried about if it got wet or dusty.

We have a Bigfoot Cargo bag...it's the one we used on the cape trip on top of the camper with our excess gear...the teenagers tent, sleeping bags etc.

You know the dust etc we want through and it wa brilliant and really solid.


Down Under camping have them online....

I've got a cheapy from 4wd super center. I got it for $99 with a spare wheel bag. And it is great. I don't use it often. Hence the cheaper one. But you can fit so much in it. I've only had it in a small shower but I only put stuff that either I'm not worried if it gets wet or is in another container or bag to keep it dry.

Good luck with the auction.

We have a MSA and we are very happy with it.  As mentioned plenty of buckles, zips etc however still would be easier than the setup you currently have.

MSA or Rhino would be my pick.  We only went the MSA as wanted the 2 metre one and MSA were on sale at the time.

I have had a rhino for 5 years now. It has always leaked water but on the last trip the buckles all pulled out of there mounts. While driving along 3 buckles let go. It is always stored in the shed whe not being used and has always been looked after.
When I first bought it I stored all the kids Christmas presents up there and it rained and well I was in a bit of trouble by the cook. After that I only ever stored gear that could get wet and it has always leaked.
Personally I will be looking at MSA when I replace this one.
