Any (house) fridge fixerer's here - Cabinet Q. ?
« on: December 22, 2015, 08:51:06 PM »
Minister's pointed out we have some black stuff leaking from a (bottom) join in our house fridge's cabinet, it's a 2 door fridge/freezer, and it's leaking from the fridge side.
It's not what you'd call soft, but no where near hard either, and slightly tacky, some of it's also stuck to the seal.
I've no idea how fridge cabinets are made, but to me it's like a coon type sealer??

Anyone able to shed some light onto this strangeness? What could/may be the ramification(s) please?

You will probably find it will wipe off with white spirits as it will be a butyl rubber based sealer. Its probably gone soft & oozed out as theres usualy a run of condencer pipe to heat around where the door seal contacts. This is designed to stop sweating.

So if this sealer continues to leak - in your opinion - it won't have an effect on the insulation? That's my concern  ;)

One would hope it doesn't continue to leak out once its cleaned up. Just curious as to the age & brand of fridge?

Shouldn't do as most fridges are sandwich construction with expanding foam bonding the outside metal cabinet to the internal plastic lining so that oozing butyl type sealant is probably local to the join. Unusual to see it melting like that but we have had a hot spell and perhaps a bad batch of mastic?
There's no Great Evil conspiracy against consumers within engineering, manufacturing and supply. Just the many tradeoffs incurred to satisfy diverse tastes, priorities and wallets. But first comes all the insatiable Gummint eggsperts, nanny-staters and usual suspects.

Fridge is +/- 2yr old, haven't tried to clean it up - besides just getting back from camp - cause I didn't know what it was, hence what to clean it with  ;)

Good to know about the expanding foam  :)  Minister 1st noticed it about 4-5mths ago...but only recently told me   ::)

Will try a clean up in the next few days  :)
