Well, today was my first official day of retirement, 56 years in the workforce, strange going to the movies on what was a normal work day for some.
So now as soon as the Quantum is sold and we can get the new Matrix we will be off on 6-9 month glamping trips....... WoooHooo!! can't wait

When I retired on 12 Sept 2013 the thing that struck me more than anything else was that I could mow the lawn on a Tuesday - didn't have to be on the weekend. And still do as a matter of principle. The other thing (as my wife is still working) how much housework and shopping I now do.

I had done all my calculations and worked out that I needed to work until 65 to be financially secure. After a couple of health issues, and being disillusioned at work, thought that state of mind was more important than money so retired 18 months ago at age 60.
Best decision I ever made.
Enjoy your retirement and live your life to the fullest.

But remember, retirement is the hardest job you have ever done.  You have to have fun everyday and you have to do what you want, and you will no longer get days off or holidays!  Dam hard job  ;D      Kevin

I'm about to turn 52 and seriously considering an early retirment. I enjoy the work I do but not the corporate environment that comes with it. The Wife and I love to travel with our CT so that would be the first priority in retirment, then theres our familys in Europe where we can spend time and even borrow a campervan for Europe travel. When I talk to friends and family they say don't retire you are to young and will get bored etc. I'd like to think I wouldn't get bored and my idea of a dream holiday is sitting in a remote National park for a few weeks and seeing no-one other than the local wildlife so i'm thinking the people who get bored in retirement are different types who don't appriecate simple travel and the natural environment and have no hobbies. I'm an ex mechanic and like playing around with cars and bikes so that would help as I do all my own maintenance.
 Anyway just trying to talk my self into early retirement I guess and interested in hearing if anyone on here has done it so young!  Financially we should be ok as we would sell our PPOR and move into the investment property on the NSW Mid North coast. I've allowed for about 60k a year for the budget which should last around 20 years and then some super and a pension if we get there.

Happy Retirement Richard.
Ive got at least another 10 before I can pull up stumps.
My philosophy is do it while you can, none of us know what's around the corner.
I've lost younger, "healthy" family and also other family who have just retired to be told they have the big C.
Do it while you can,  cherish your loved ones and live your life while you can still enjoy it.

Everyone is different i reckon when it comes to getting bored doing certain things. The wifes Uncle retired about that age after selling up his earth moving business and a few other trucks he had, only to return back to work driving a truck a few years later as he was bored, being all his mates his age were still working. He bought a new boat when he retired and went fishing several times a week atleast in it, then every few weeks, then once a month, then every couple of months etc etc...he just had nobody to go fishing with him as they were at work still. Being you plan to have the wife with you travelling around, it'd be a different kettle of fish maybe.

Well done Richard, I did it three years ago at age 55,and no regrets.I am never bored & don't have enough time in the day to do all that I want,but ask me what I was so busy doing yesterday and I can't remember!

Me too on that one - I'm definitely over working for the "man" I would be going at 55 if not for Krudd and Costello's changes to when you can retire.

Thank you all for your good wishes.

 I don't think I will want for anything to do, I have my shed with all that I want in it, both woodworking and mechanical, love working around the house, my vehicle maintenance, winter for the football for which we are members of a club, and, more importantly, the touring we will do, I am fortunate SWMBO loves camping as much as I do.

Not sure about some of these comments Richard.  I retired 2 years ago at 48 after getting a son thru medicine and a daughter thru pharmacy, paid the house of off had some cash in the bank and wondered why I was flogging myself at a senior exec position.  I'm never bored, I spend time on my bikes, van, and 4x4, old mates, new mates and yes.....shopping and house tidying.  Richard, enjoy it mate as it always comes well deserved.  Congrats.
