LC200 Sahara in sand and soft

Hey everyone,
So we are heading into some sand with the new vehicle..
This will be a first in this car, lots and lots of experience in other cars.
Now being a Sahara it has all the traction control modes etc..
I'm curious what do people run?

With my van I would go normally low range sand mode in soft stuff with tyres down. Then in semi hard sand switch to high range.

What I've discovered though it seems the traction modes are only available in low range.

Do people switch to low range all the time for sand and in the mode or stay in high range.

Have cooper atr tyres and will drop down to sensible .

Anyhow what do people run with?
Car has been fantastic, I know it will perform well just making sure we have the right modes or anything we need to set.

Inskip Point a few days ago, sand was soft and dry. Towed van through in low 3rd. Tyre pressure about 18psi all round. Made it through unassisted, passed 2 Landcruisers bogged axel deep!

I believe you need to turn the traction control off in a sand situation ! ?

although I have no direct experience with the 200!

Yeah few thoughts on lcool about sand. I've only used high range on sand.
Here for a good time, not a long time!

In general traction control & soft sand don't mix. Turn the T.C/ off.

No experience with the LC either but I do know that with a lot of vehicles T/control & soft sand don't mix.
A friend has a new Dmax & was told by the dealer to disengage T/C in soft stuff.

Didn't know if it was worthwhile using the assisted traction response as well.

I have a 2012 VX Cruiser.  On sand, HIGH range, centre diff locked & traction control off (Hold till light comes on other wise only partially disabled).  In sand hills I also turn off the RSCA.

Personally I start at 15PSI all round.

In soft sand towing situations I have been in a situation where I could not proceed (not bogged :)) and the CRAWL at the recommended sand speed pulled both car and trailer up and over a couple of large soft sand hills.  I was surprised at how well it worked.

The sand terrain mode does work but insists that you are in low range.

I've worked out how to do the centre diff and traction control.
But still need to work out where to disable the rsca (stability control) originally assumed that was traction control. It's obviously not.

I have an older model 200 sahara without any of the gizmos, but towing our fully loaded goldstream at 1550kg in sand i have never needed low range. Centre diff locked and 18psi in tyres all round. No problems. Best vehicle ever driven in sand by miles.
Your van is heavier so that may slow progress somewhat. Good luck.

Firefox , I think rsca is rear seat curtain airbag, which you'll have the option of turning off in conditions where body lean may indicate to all of the electrickery an impending roll over and trigger the airbags. That's certainly the case on my 100s

Mines an older 200 as well,  but LOW range and centtre diff locked and all aids off, but I'm not sure what process yours needs to engage sand mode.

I use low range because I figure you may as well give the 4wd every bit of help, and towing a van on sand, you don't want to find out the hard way if at all possible.

Aahh, no, TC will also slow them down as well. If it senses a wheel slipping, it will brake that wheel, which slows the 4wd down, and on sand , momentum is what you want.

TC will work good on dirt and rocky ground where there is traction to be had, but not on sand.

Basically TC will help prevent wheel spin across axles by braking the wheel ON THAT AXLE that is spinning fastest, leaving the other axle alone.
ASC will attempt to prevent wheel spin across all 4 wheels by braking both wheels on the opposite side of the vehicle in an attempt to prevent the vehicle from slewing dangerously at highway speed. The many youtube videos of lane change tests clearly demonstrate this.

Anecdotal evidence on the Paj forum indicates that TC has no ill effects in soft sand, whereas ASC will kill momentum very quickly. In the Paj you can't turn off the TC, only the ASC, and they tow fine on soft sand, as long as ASC is disabled.

Yep, correct.....it will BRAKE the wheel, which in itself slows the 4wd down. I don't know anything about Pajeros, but with the Challenger I had you could turn both off.

If you have the means to turn off TC, then turn it off, as well as ASC.

Been in very soft sand with my paj and I can tell you that asc needs to be off otherwise it will go nowhere. Lol. But I've found its better to have traction control on. Doesn't slow u down as it only brakes the wheel spinning so no lost a f speed as drive continues at the other wheels at the same rate. A spinning wheel is useless no matter what. I know it sounds wrong but it's better then having it off. I've tried lots off combinations. Rear diff lock on. Traction control just on the front. Asc etc. TC also works great going up dug out sand dunes. Just go slow and let it climb and make funny noises. Or you could use more momentum but I like to just cruise.

With the LC200 just play around with it and find what works. Half the fun is getting bogged.

Yep turn off all traction aids. if you use them they will just help get bogged. Drop tyre pressures and momentum is the key. Traction aids don't work in sand. First time I used the 200 in sand I ended up getting bogged just from the traction aids

yeah this is all very similar to that of my old Landrover vehicles.. Have driven probably a years worth of driving on sand so know how to drive properly.
First venture out with the big LC200 and sand with the heavy Van on the back :)..

Looks like from here and LCOOL that.

If i'm in soft sand i need Low range, TC off, Centre Diff On and take it slow.. (like i used to in my other cars..) The sahara defaults in Low Range to sand mode..

If in hard sand along beach up to high range will be fine..

You have it right Firefox, I spent the whole border track in high except for one dune which was a little soft, With a load on the rear you may need low for sure.
