where do I source a box hitch receiver to attach bike rack
« on: December 02, 2015, 09:00:21 PM »
Hi guys,

I want to install a 50mm or 2" square hitch receiver (ie a standard hayman reece square hollow section) on the rear bumper bar of my 2014 Jayco Swan Outback camper trailer.  My intention is to purchase and attach an SIS 4x4x4 bike rack on the back for our mountain bikes the same as this one:

http://www.isi-carriers.com/customers/tb-expanda/jayco-bicycle_rack.html

I have removed the spare wheel of the bumper bar and stuck it on my tugs roof rack to counter the increase weight of the bike rack and bikes.

My problem though is sourcing a 2" square hitch receiver!!  I have rung numerous tow bar specialists and nobody sells or can tell me where I can purchase one. The only ones I can find are on ebay:

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Hitch-Receiver-fits-any-Hayman-Reese-2-Towbar-NOW-with-welded-nut-/151815917526?hash=item2358ef0fd6:g:yVQAAMXQWzNSdbLS

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/UNIVERSAL-STEP-BUMPER-RECEIVER-HITCH-ATV-TOW-BAR-4WD-TRAILER-CAMPER-/261788992253?hash=item3cf3d702fd:g:0wQAAOSwstxU6o6h

I then planned to get a steel welder/fabricator to attach it to my rear bumper bar.

Does anyone know who sells these or what type of shop may sell these hitch receivers (apart from ebay)?  I'm in Perth.

Alternatively I'm going to have to go down the road of attaching a standard A-frame type bike rack to my rear bar. But that wouldn't pivot down so I'd have to take the bikes off and on every stop.  I've previously used a spare tyre type bike rack and that got me to Coral Bay and back but I'm just not going to trust it over 6000+km's across the Nullarbor and back.

Hi Beegee
Check out gumtree.

http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/oakford/auto-body-parts/landcruiser-reece-towbar/1095201631

selling for $50. Get whoever you are going to use, to cut off the hitch as edz suggested.

Hi guys,

Thanks to D4D I grabbed the one from Intertrade Holdings for $59. I searched the net but D4D's link was just around the corner from me!!!

http://intertradeholdings.com.au/mister-hitches-weld-on-receiver-tube.html

So I've picked up the receiver tube and booked my Swan in to have the rear bumper bar braced for extra strength and the receiver tube installed in readiness for the ISI bike rack which I have ordered and paid for.

always like a picture of the end result. Curious to know cost to get tube welded on and strengthening of rear bar.

For anyone else.  The hitch receiver is just 65 X 65 X 6mm SHS, stocked by any steel merchant.

Surely SHS 65 x 65 x 6mm can't be right.  That leaves an internal hollow of 59 x 59mm.  Most tongue's are quoted at 50mm. 9mm is a big gap and the tongue would slop around everywhere.

I just measured my newly purchased receiver and also the one on my tug and both have a hollow of 53mm, which to me seems an acceptable tolerance of 3mm.

Its 65 od minus the 2 wall thickness's so 65 minus 12      gives 53mm ID
