Vehicle to tow 300kg trailer - how small can I go?
« on: September 26, 2015, 10:03:08 PM »
Well my engine just crapped itself and I'm in the market - no off road.
I know about the manufacture tow ratings but I have to wonder if that really reflects haul capacity beyond the local rubbish tip.
I'm hoping to get away with 4 cylinder 2-2.5.
All replies appreiciated.

Basically anything you can fit a tow bar too. 300kg is the equivalent of a couple fat chicks in the back.

Hey Mate.

I have a Subaru Outback which is a 2.5 4 Cylinder petrol engine and tow a trailer to the tip regularly. And it does it without even knowing. So not a problem there.

Also had it towing a Tandem box trailer and it knew it was there but still did brilliantly.

So I think a 4 cylinder will be fine!

Mate towed his boat and trailer behind his Yaris,  that outfit weighed just over 300 kg  was funny to see the Yaris with a towbar

I made this trailer. It cost me about $1100 with front wheel chock for a motorcycle ( not pictured) sold it for $750. I actually made this frame twice once with gal steel. i tacked it all together. but i didnt want to get poisoned. So i made it with regular steel. Torsion suspension. LED lights. Weighed 120kg. plus bike (RGV250 140kg). Worked well but accelleration was slower and braking much longer. But this is with a 700kg Echo with a 1.3L engine.

My Advice is do what i did. BUY a XG falcon. mine cost $700 with 11months rego. Another $600 for RWC... MUCH cheaper option.

I loved this trailer.. so well thought out

( its was a total of 2400 long and 1200 wide. Standard sheet)

I have seen a mate with a corolla tow an enclosed motorbike trailer. Only had one bike in it that time though.  I don't know how many he has had in it

Surely you need a v8 diesel for that!

More seriously, my forester 2.5 rows the box trailer with no dramas, when I put the camper on you certainly know it's there, but seems to cope fine on anything but a long steep hill.

If what you are towing hides behind the vehicle, ie not a big sail behind you, you'll hardly know it's there in anything bigger than a corolla.

We have been towing a offroad softfloor camper trailer with a Suzuki Grand Vitara  2.4 litre capacity for 3years with no problems but we keep out of 5th gear for towing.
