By the end of 2017, Tailem Bend will have a world-class motor racing venue and its own Shitbox Taxi racing event.

Proposed upgrades at the SA Motorsport Park won final approval from the Development Assessment Commission (DAC) on Wednesday, paving the way for construction to start within months.

The venue's owner, Peregrine Corporation, has also signed a memorandum of understanding with Shitbox Taxis guaranteeing a round of the race series - separate to the Clipsal 500 laps of follow the leader - after the facility's scheduled completion in 2017.

Peregrine Corporation director Sam Shahin, the driving force behind the project, said it would fill South Australia's need for a top quality motor sport venue.

"Rigorous planning and design work has occurred over the last 12 months to create what will be a world-class facility," he said.

"It is fantastic to now ... reach this important milestone."

Coorong Mayor Neville Jaensch was excited about the latest news.

"We're delighted it's through this process and we're looking forward to a good, long-term working relationship with the Shahin family and Peregrine," he said.

"It'll offer obvious benefits to the Mid Murray, Murray Bridge, Alexandrina councils and ourselves for tourism potential.

"We're looking forward to employment opportunities, not just within our district but throughout."

A handful of parties submitted comments to the DAC hearing, including the owners of three nearby properties who were concerned about the noise the racetrack would generate.

At least one resident expressed willingness to negotiate a buy-out.

In response, Peregrine Corporation argued that motor racing was always going to be noisy, that the nearby highways already produced a certain level of background noise and that residents should have raised their concerns in 2012, when the land was rezoned for motor sport use.

However, it noted noise-blocking mounds had been included in its plans.

The finished motorsport park will feature a variable-length racetrack, 270-metre-long pit building, drag strip and 1000-seat amphitheatre, drift circuit, go-karting facility, rally and rally cross tracks and a four-wheel-drive adventure park.

The site will also house a service station and restaurant, a 100-room hotel, 20 cabins, a caravan park, an exhibition centre, an airstrip and a helipad.

Peregrine Corporation hopes to hold as many as 200 events there per year, from small club meetings to V8 Supercars races, as well as offering each race track for hire.

The corporation submitted 645 pages of information to the DAC.

Dont forget the QLD Lakeside, Darlington park and Surfers Paradise tracks either .. :'(
Maybe if they model it on they way David Lowey built up the Air Museum Airplex at Temora NSW, incorporating all subdivisions surrounding the Airfield and having a covenent that you buy build there knowing that its an active airfield and cant shut it down ..

Not unless Tailem Bend has changed since last time I was there.  It wasn't exactly going gangbusters.

Why? Would you rather have risked driving on?
May not have been your idea of paradise, but it's home to people that live/work/provides services in the area.

This is the real deal fellas. The backers are serious as are the various levels of government supporting them. Not too far from where I live, but a different world out there at the Bend. The site and origins of the track hark back to the old Mitsubishi Adelaide operations proving ground. It's on the corner of the Mallee Highway and the Princes Highway, outside of the township by a few K's, a great site for access from Adelaide and the eastern states. Contacts I have on Council tell me the real estate is going gangbusters due to the track, I guess there are interested cashed up parties that will make the most of the events there. A great outlook for the region for sure, and in SA we need everything we can get in terms of good news!

Cheers!

They have been holding drift events there for awhile, if anything it will bring more ppl to the bend, not exactly a tourist Mecca as it is right now!

Kudos to the guys with persistence, too many permanent venues have been lost in the last few decades due to rezoning and developers dollars thru the back door...

I'm all for motorsport (and love the sound of the 'off-road' section) but I don't understand why Adelaide NEEDS another motorsport park - we've already got two that are getting run down due to lack of use (and subsequent lack of $).

Adelaide Internatiknal Raceway - http://www.adelaideraceway.com.au

Mallala - http://www.adelaideraceway.com.au

Plus our street circuit as used by the Clipsal 500

I would have though upgrading AIR or Mallala would have been more cost effective???

They're all privately owned so what does it matter if they want to spend money on it?4

Be good to see drag racing back in Adelaide on a decent track not at rundown AIR under the control of the greedy Jane family.

Interesting... I didn't think if it like that but you have an interesting point.

I just did some research via Google and found this article - http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/tailem-bend-motorsport-park-the-plan-for-sas-second-v8-race/story-fnpp66pk-1227397492850

It would appear the SA Motorsport Park is going to be another privately privately owned facility owned by a private family/company - the Shahin family who also owners of 'On The Run' petrol stations, 'Smokemart' & 'GiftBox' companies.

According to the quoted article,  the Federal Govt has agreed to co-contribute $7.5million, as well as the SA Goverments $7.5million - that's a total of $15 million of Australian taxpayers money for a third PRIVATELY OWNED motorsport park in SA!

I'm somewhat comfortable with the tax payer contribution, although the Shahin family don't really need the help, but it does sweeten the deal. (Let's face it, both levels of govt piss a lot more money down the drain than this. It's just a drop in the ocean.) The State can't afford to develop (or re-develop) a better Motorsport park in SA. And even if they could afford it, they could never run it commercially, nor attract enough high quality events to justify any major capital expenditure.

The Shahins don't do things by halves, look at their investment in SA over the past decade, developing the OTR stores, incorporation the HJ, Wendys, Brumbys etc franchises. They have many other business interests in SA also.

I am sure, if they are involved in a suitable Motorsport park, an hour from Adelaide, they will make it the Premier park in the state, with top quality facilities. They would have to, they aren't going to develop a huge park, and then let it go to ruin.

It could be the next big thing in SA, and certainly in the Lower Murray area.

I recently visited Paul Morris's V8 driving centre on the Gold Coast (http://www.driveriderace.com.au/ride-race/), and if something like this was incorporated, it would be very successful.

The only concern would be the size of our population, are there enough people in SA that are going to pay to go to regular events?

I thought AIR was owned by bob Jane? He has a history of gettin the Shits and shutting down his venues when things get tense with cams or andra  (Calder springs to mind)

And it doesn't hurt that they are motor racing enthusiasts themselves either..
