We're the folks looking for the trailer; have just joined, and Tommo was nice enough to start this thread in the interim.

Thanks Wilson79 for the tip. While that Ecomate looks ripper, it's out of our price range. Originally our budget was $10k, but then we discovered forward fold campers, so now we've pushed that up to $15-17k. REALLY don't want to spend more than $17; I'm reluctant to even spend that much.

These Chinese-made, assembled-here campers are the only FF in our price range, and although we'd prefer Aussie made, we can't even find any 2nd-hands. So we'll take the risk of the lesser workmanship, in order to get the kids up off the ground.

Welcome to myswag NoCoFamilyWanderers,

I have a Broadwater FF camper and love it, there are a few others on this site that have them to with no issues to talk of. They are based on the Gold Coast which may be an issue for you, they will arrange delivery or you can always make a trip out of it.

As for the other trailers, I would search this site regarding them. One of the companies you are interested in does not have a very good after market service record.

Good luck in your search.

Parents recently hired a Mars FF spirit and travelling in it now.  Travelled Albury up to Birdsville and home down Birdsville track.  All positive comments re the Mars.

They own a  big jayco silverline van and didn't want to take that to Birdsville and back so they hired.  My dad has been impressed and they have had nil issues towing behind 100 series cruiser.

I have a Broadwater FF.  They are certainly within your price bracket.  Its been up the beach a bit, made one or twenty trips to some 4wd Parks, been to Cameron's Corner. (Lots of corrugation)
And one or three other places.
All in all, we are pretty happy with it.
Good luck with your search.

Thanks heaps jackriley, Rural and Fathom. We've seen the Broadwater ones and they look good, but the GC location turned us off. But worth another look following your positive reviews. All our family is at the GC, so could make a trip of it. And good to hear the Mars gets a thumbs up too.

Evolution, we'll try to figure out how to PM you to have a chat about a ModCon. Definitely worth a chat.

Re the original three choices, the MDC is pretty much ready to go -- one week lead time, where the other two are more like two months' wait, and around $2k more.

On one hand, we wanna get off ASAP to enjoy Vic's new 2 Oct public holiday + Melbourne Cup weekend this year. On the other hand, is that rushing on a major purchasing decision, and could we regret not getting a better quality camper for the sake of waiting for a couple of months?

It's kind of looking lie the MDC at this stage...But still undecided.  ???

To be honest, it's not a small purchase and I wouldn't rush it. At the same time I have an MDC and have had no real issues at all and those I've had they have fixed me up quickly. Good luck with the choice

Might be money well spent to try & hire for the weekends you mentioned. That will give an idea of what works & what doesn't.
Then you can make an informed decision. I would've done that if there were any hire places where i am, thats for sure

Noco how many people will be using the camper?

Forward folds are great, my parents have one and I love the design of them but have personally found them not to be compatible with the way we camp, not enough storage, not enough room - if using the lounge as a bed there was not anywhere to store bags and very little room to move.

Everybody camps differently but we found that our soft floor had many more advantages for family camping then the FFs did. In saying that its perfect for my parents and is way better for them than a soft floor would be.

Make sure you think about the practicalities of camping and how you would use the space as well as how awesome the design idea of FF campers are because right up until I borrowed my parents I thought they would be great for us, but the reality wasn't quite the same as the idea.

Hey gang,

Thanks again for your replies; really appreciate y'all taking the time to respond.

slcs78, yep, that's what I was thinking. Don't want to rush in and make the wrong choice! And stoked to hear your MDC has come up well.

Moggy, awesome idea, thanks! That'd be a great way to get out on the new 2 Oct long weekend, and give different brands a shot.

Thanks a bunch for this info Lori. Funny, we're also renovating (HUGE reno) our new home that we've just bought, and the budget for that has just blown out, such that we've started talking about spending less on the camper and going for a soft floor <$10k. We do like to pack A LOT of stuff. If you get a chance, could you elaborate a little on how else you prefer your soft floor to your folks' FF?

Sooooo.....ooooo.....

We ended up doing a complete 360ยบ and have just put a deposit on an Aussie Jays "The Crusher" soft floor!

We decided that wanted to go quality over quantity and go Aussie made, and we're really stoked with the decision. Should be able to get it by Xmas! Can't wait to hit the road.

I've had a look at his campers. Good quality and as far as I can see from other forums only minor issues for those who have had any. Good choice mate

Congrats on your new camper Noco!

Sorry it has taken so long to get back and answer your question, though with your new camper the answer probably isn't as relevant now  ;D

One of the reasons we bought a camper trailer is because with up-to 5 kids coming with us at any one time we were taking a fair amount of gear and had to tow a trailer anyway (albeit a small garden trailer) and the setup and pack up time was horrendous. I was sick of living out of boxes (plastic containers) and having to dig through everything just to find a pair of tongs or a torch and at the end of camp I would have to play tetris to get everything back in the containers - I hated it, it really put a damper on camping.

Our softfloor is a walkup style with a 12 foot tent. We replaced the kitchen that came with it, a small tailgate kitchen with enough room for a sink, cooker and about 1mtr of foldable bench space and virtually no storage (which meant I would have to store all my stuff in tubs again) to a Drifter DPOR. Our kitchen now has a place for everything and everything in its place  :D And because we have the pantry slide that means we dont need to lift up the bed to access gear stored in the camper, we just pull out the drawer. With the kitchen setup at one end of the awning (our kitchen takes up about 1/3rd of available space under the awning) there is plenty of room to setup our table and chairs at the other.

The tent area is big enough that we setup three stretchers and still there is room for all the kids to sit in the middle and play a board game together. We store the bags under the stretchers and out of the way.

Our storage is big enough that all items are stored in the camper (except those that we prefer to take out) and all we have to do is add food, clothes and people and we can leave. In our pantry drawer we always have the staples packed eg. Sauces, salt and pepper, vegemite, 2 min noodles, flour ect

With the forward fold we have found that the kitchen is very limited, room for a sink, cooker and a few things underneath - no prep space. The kitchen itself is spread out up the entire side of the camper eg. pull out kitchen...camper door...storage door (pantry?)....fridge. Which meant that putting a table up under the awning for the kids meant that the kids or the chairs were constantly in the way when I needed to get to the pantry or the fridge, at lunch time the kids all tend to come sit at the table and I make them sandwiches (everyone get a choice of what they want and its always different!) and it is hard to get to everything I need. Because of the lack of kitchen storage space my mum still has most of her stuff packed in tubs and has to setup a little table for kitchen prep. She has also bought a gazebo for when the grand kids camp with her so that she can set them up a table and chairs.

The inside is great for two but more than that and it feels really crowded, even when it is used only for sleeping space. When the lounge is setup as a bed the only floor space is the doorway area about 60cm wide and 1.5mtr long. There is nowhere to store your clothes or other items usually kept in the tent, under the lounge bed can be difficult to get to when the bed is set up. The area inside the camper is quite small and we found that it couldn't store what we needed it to for travelling. My girls hate having to sleep together in the same bed, they dont mind being in the same tent but the same bed causes arguments.

The great advantage to the FF is you are up off the ground but I have not found to much difference in setup time. It takes about 5+ mins (with practice) to fully setup the main tent and then the awning is the same as awnings everywhere - they take a while.
Our soft floor we have the main tent fully setup within 10mins and the awning we do faster than my parents, but I think thats because we are just faster! It takes us longer to setup the stretchers for the kids, but if its an overnight stop we just throw the 4WD mats on the floor (which we store flat on top of our mattress) give them a sleeping bag and they are ready.

I know there are families out there who have a FF and it works for them, but for us it was more trouble than it was worth and made the experience less comfortable for everyone.
