Camp Strechers
« on: September 02, 2015, 08:20:03 AM »
Hi
I am looking to get a couple of stretchers to get us off the ground when tent camping.
Looking to put two into a Black Wolf turbo 240 Plus.  So the tent dimensions are 2.4 x 2.4 meters.

I would also like to use it under my B&W Coolobah XL swag which  is 2400 long and  1100 Wide when not tenting.
The only one i can seem to fin that s decent sized is the Darche XL100  (http://darche.com.au/product/xl-100/)

So what are people thoughs on using stretchers, any tips , tricks or feedback.
How do you stop them damaging the tent base when using in a tent. an Icecream lid under? etc

Cheers
Robert

Hi Robert,
swmbo and I use king size stretchers when tent camping and throw our swags on top. Apart from being off the ground, the benefit we find is that it gives space under each stretcher for storage and easier for our aging bones to get in and out of bed, as opposed to trying to get up off the floor.
We also put an old blanket/sleeping bag on the stretcher, (then the swag on top) to assist with a bit more insulation (warmth) from cold penetrating underneath.
In terms of protecting the tent floor, we bought some furniture castor cups with felt/carpet bottom under each stretcher leg. Hope this helps.

We have been using stretchers in both the Camper Trailer and tent for about 10 years and to date haven’t had any issues with the legs wrecking the floor.

Fantastic bit of kit as they are so easy to put up, fold up well and keep you off the cold ground.

We used foam mats for the feet when we used to tent it.

Hi Robert
I have a 270 blackwolf (2700 x 2700)
We have Oztent King Goanna stretchers put side by side and they are great but as the tent tapers from ground up the tent touches the sides of our beds not a biggy until you camp in winter and your body touches the sides getting in and out
So I think the 240 isn't going to work for you
We ended up getting 2 Oztent 5's with the connector the beds still touch in these tents but only at the foot of the bed
The 3 kids in the other tent and are on good quality self inflators which just fit

Are you saying they fit inside a black wolf turbo 240 D4D?

Looks like it is a toss up between the Oztent King Gonna and the Darche XL100

Cheers

Remember the size of the tent is floor size.

I have a blackwolf turbo 240 and bought a 2m long Roman deluxe stretcher. At the height of the stretcher the tent has narrowed so it only just fits.

Great stretcher though. With a thermarest on top gives a great sleep.

I Just bought & used for the first time on the weekend a Darche Xl100 with my B&W Coolabah XL Stretcher. Had a great sleep, I looked for ages for a Stretcher and the Darche was the only 1000 wide one

Mate their the kids but not jet bunkers the cheaper oztrail ones. They seem happy with them but they are definitely colder than the swag.

I bought a OZtrail Easy Fold Stretcher Single Jumbo. https://www.tentworld.com.au/buy-sale/oztrail-easy-fold-stretcher-single-jumbo
It's 900 wide and supports my "ever so light" (not) frame well.
I have a Murchison River King Brown swag which fits with a small overhang but nothing to worry about.
Have found both to be a good combination.
I looked at the Darche and it seemed to be bigger and heavier but not necessarily better. Mine was on special at the time whereas the Darche wasn't so made the purchase much easier.
The stretcher I bought doesn't seem to suffer the end to end wobbles that the straight "x" framed ones have.

Thanks guys,
Went and checked out  a couple of the ones you kindly listed above at my local tent shop today.
Luckily had both the Darche xl100 and the OZtrail Easy Fold Stretcher Single Jumbo.

The Oztrail Easy Fold Stretcher Single Jumbo seemed very stable but I think the demo unit had a problem  as one end was about 3-4 cm lower then the middle and other end.
So the blood was running to my head. IE i was not flat all the way, like a slightly bent banana.  They checked it and it was set up all right, Maybe someone just had bent it as it was floor stock.  but it didn't fill me with confidence due to that issue. Noel/ Carlos are yours dead flat?

The Darche xl100 in comparison was dead flat. It is a bigger unit  and you do notice the extra width, i dare say this may be better for my B&W 1100 Wide swag but would struggle to get two of these in my Blackwolf 240 tent.
So i am leaning to 2 x OZtrail Easy Fold Stretcher Single Jumbo if i confirm they are perfectly flat and not sloping like the demo unit I tried.

Cheers
Robert

Yep, mine is flat. The sleeper on it is rather round though haha.
I think they may have a damaged unit on display. As I said, very happy with mine so far, used it probably 6 to 7 times now. I found it to be more stable than the Darche one.

Thanks Noel.
It must have been a problem with the floor stock  demo unit then in at tentworld.

Thanks for all the input and to close this off.
Was lucky enough that tentworld had a blackwolf Turbo 240 set up on display and both the Oztrail Easy Fold Stretcher , Darche XL100 and the Oztent King Goanna. so I could put all of them into the tent and try.

In the end the bigger stretchers were a too tight fit. So i went  with 2 x  OzTent King Goannas
as they were the most comfortable and came with a 5 year warranty
