Alva Beach claims two more
« on: September 01, 2015, 08:45:34 AM »
Alva Beach has swallowed two more vehicles in the last couple of months.
I'm not sure why the Cruiser thought it would be a good idea to take a closer look at the half buried ute.

Nasty. Precisely why I haven't ventured up the beach there yet. I'm told there are patches of that mud hiding under the sand all the way up to cape bowling green. Supposed to have been grey nomads too.

So what's the danger there?

Is it like Rainbow Beach where you "have" to ( >:D) pass round the rocks at low tide, then get swamped or what?

So what's the danger there?

Have a look at the map in this link. Zoom in on the  location marked "43" where the cruiser is sitting. You can see the mangroves behind the beach and the beach is mud that is often covered with a nice firm layer of sand. It's not safe to go past where the mangroves start. There would be at least a dozen wrecks along that strip. Some of them have been completely covered for years.

Thanks.

Need a password to view that link but I get the idea - break through that nice firm sand into a bottomless pit of mud, & if you're doing any speed at the time, flip straight over onto your roof, as per the Cruiser.  :'(

The Cruiser was upright for a few tides, but it got a bit tired and rolled over.

Alva Beach graveyard has another resident
This one is about 50 meters before the cruiser I posted before.

The pajero  has been there since last Wednesday. Apparently 2 day earlier, another vehicle sat there for one tide before it was retrieved.

If you are wondering why you can't see the cruiser, you can, it is the tiny black spot just above the hood in the water.
Not a lot to see though.

If you look carefully you can see the Pajero behind the mangrove on the right.

I have to own up that I got stuck there over twenty years ago when working at Ayr hospital. One of the few times I thought I would lose my vehicle. Its pretty scary when you just sink suddenly into goop.

You're lucky, not many get out once they are in.
A few weeks ago a Discovery left some decent tracks in there and he was surprised he made it out.
