Barge Information
« on: January 07, 2010, 03:33:06 PM »
Copy of information from original trip thread

Just to give you an idea of timings, our plan is to be on the first barge over from River Heads on Saturday morning the 1st May.  We would then have a meeting point, say at Happy Valley or Eurong Beach for example, giving everyone adequate time to travel from the barge and then set off together to choose our camping spot.  I understand that not everyone will arrive at this time but hopefully we can get the majority together and then there will be arrangements in place for the rest to locate us.  As to how long you stay is entirely up to you.  Our departure will be Saturday 8th May and more than likely on the afternoon barge.

I have spoken to Fraser Island Ferry's today and bookings can be made as soon as you like.  For those travelling from the North down to Fraser I would advise that this be done sooner rather than later as the barge only runs 3 times a day from River Heads.  We will be booking on the 8.30am departure.  The following websites should help:

http://www.fraserislandferry.com.au/

http://www.fraserislandbarge.com.au/

For those coming from the south, Inskip Point is your departure from the main land across to Fraser. Follow the signs from Gympie to Rainbow Beach (top up your fuel tanks here) and then out to Inskip Point. 2 Manta Ray Barges run all day from 6am till 5.30pm and take about 10 mins to cross to Fraser from Inskip Point. $150 will get you and your camper across and back on Manta Ray Barges. Go to this website to buy your ticket for the barge and also your permits for the island too. We recommend them as they are run by the locals and offer great service.

Air down your tyres before getting onto the beach at Inskip Point. It is historically very powdery sand and when towing a camper, I am sure it will make for some fun to get to the barge without digging down. We've seen many people over the years do a lot of digging on Inskip.

We have booked our spot on the Fraser Venture barge run by Fraser Island Barge's (www.fraserislandferry.com.au) departing River Heads on Saturday 1st May at 8.30am.  It will drop off at Wangoollba Creek on Fraser and then we will drive over to Eurong Beach and meet up with those heading up from Inskip/Hook Point.

This is the company you will need to book with if you are heading down from the north of Hervey Bay.

We will either be over there Super early on the first barge at 6am from Inskip or after lunch. Given that High Tide is at 9.30am, we will struggle to get up the beach to camp mid morning.

Anyway, we will see what happens closer to the day.  ;D

Then you can have a relaxing drive up the centre of the Island and be waiting for us at Eurong if you get the 6am barge...
Cheers

Yeah, if we get the 6am, we will come up the worst road on the island (inland road from Hook Point), drop out onto the beach and then up to Eurong to hang for the crowd. Otherwise, we may sleep in and get up there around lunch time.......see what the boss would like to do.  8)

Knowing Meagan like I do, it will almost definately be a sleep in  :'(.......but I'll be preparing to give her a nudge at 4am and see what response I get.  >:D I think it will be easier on the kids to have a sleep in too. Might even give me the opportunity to get in a ride before we go, while the rest of the fam has a sleep in.  8)

Either way, we will get there some time Saturday.

Its ALL about the recovery mate......might as well stay in there while you are there. None of this getting out early, then going back later like.....er, others.  ::)

Just you be sure to bring your running shoes mate. Can't let the training slip.  ;)
