Hi all, not sure if this has been covered on here but thought i needed to ask the question
does anyone know of a website that can help to find the maximum legal speed limits on certain roads through out Australia?

The question comes about as our Work supplied vehicles have In Vehicle Monitoring Systems in them and it posts back to management on any traffic infringements, then we get forwarded a please explain as to why and how the infringement came about, then if it is deemed that drivers are at fault its a black mark against their name with warnings then written warnings given and even dismissal if the infrinegments still keep occuring.
we are currently working in western Qld and travelling on roads that have no posted limit signage and on certain corners/bends the recommended limit is 80 kph which is telling me that the limit before the corner is 100.

any help here is appreciated

If there are no posted signs then the speed limit is 100 in Vic. My GPS (Tom tom) actually has the speed limit and the speed I'm doing at the time displayed. The limit flashes if I go 5km over the posted speed. Speed limits change all the time so it's not always right , but it helps.  :police:

Don't go any faster than 60, then when someone overtakes, pick it up to their speed.  ;D

Aren't the yellow corner speed signs just advisory anyway? ie not legally enforceable. At least in NSW they are.

I don't think there is a single place. Roads are maintained at a state and local level, and the data isn't usually freely available

But your VMS has to be taking its speeds from somewhere. Where and what is that database and who maintains it? Mostly probably there is one, but its not available for public consumption, or at least requires a fee.
Then the next question is how accurate is this data and how often is it refreshed?  My TomTom also posts the speed limits as it thinks they are, but sometimes is wrong. Seems silly that management are relying on data that might be out of date.

Try these:
I believe open street map has a maxspeed attribute -but the data is crowdsourced again so don't know about the accuracy.
http://www.openstreetmap.org/
Search for the road and you'll see the data in the left pane- Max speed is what you are after. Not all road show this though.

Or if its a section of road out of town, its a bit harder. Zoom to the section of the road in question. Then click Export (it will want to save it as an osm.file., change that to XML). Open the file and search (Ctrl& F) for maxspeed
eg: the line you want is Tag v = 110k k=maxspeed
<tag v="trunk" k="highway"/>
<tag v="110" k="maxspeed"/>
<tag v="Great Northern Highway" k="name"/>

or
tag v="secondary" k="highway"/>
<tag v="110" k="maxspeed"/>
<tag v="Broome-Cape Leveque Road" k="name"/>

or try this: http://www.speedalert.com.au/products.php

Or this: You could use Google streetview and go back until you see a sign.

Or this: http://www.wikispeedia.org/ - crowdsourced - poor data for Australia

Simple, if your boss knows where you are speeding he/she must have a data base of speed limits for the area you travel.  Ask for that database in a form that can be downloaded into your GPS.

If they don't provide it, but are prepared to use it against you have a chat to your Union rep.

thanks for the replies guys,

@Dingo:my Hema HN6 does not post any speeds on those roads, not sure whether its the Hema system that is out of date but i have updated maps approx 4 months ago so it should be quite current
@TIME:My boss only has access to the reports as the system itself is monitored by a 3rd party and is very difficult to deal with, hence me seeking some sort of further knowledge of the limits outside of our work area.
@tk421:thanks for those points i will try them and see how i go with related info

If you drive everywhere at 140kmp , I am sure that the boys in blue will tell you what the road speed is set at. ;D

The yellow/black speed signs for corners is the recommendation to take the corner safely.
If driving a country road and you're not sure, sit on 100.

The VMS database is not always correct either. I used to get overspeed  alerts when my guys were going up the Calder Fwy saying they were doing 105 when they were in a 110 speed zone, I knew that but my boss gets the report as well,  and he was always quick to jump to conclusions . My advise to them was if they were  not sure,  slow  down,  they were getting paid for it anyway and they may have a better chance of making it home

Databases on this info is pretty poor for rural and remote areas and often on phones as soon as you loose coverage you loose mapping
VMS simply logs speed and GPS location, the analysis is done by a third party. Companies who use this tech arent really able to be argued with, union rep or not.

For the OP the speed limit is what you see on the traditional speed limit sign, and the new electronic  ones.  Yellow and black are only advisory and not enforceable.
If there are no signs it is 50 in built up areas and 100 outisde of these areas.

Built up area is any road with street lights and/or buildings for at least 500 metres (or the whole road if under 500). Building mean any buildings, not just houses.

This is from each States version of the Australian Road Rules
The above is for Qld, Vic, NSW, SA
tas, except max 80 on unsealed roads
Not sure abou NT too hard to find a copy of the road rules on the net, and WA are different have a completely different test of rules to everyone else
Some states also add restrictions on learner, probatonary and some vehicle types.

Be careful when people advise that advisory speed limits are not enforceable.  Have a collision on a section of road that contains such a advisory speed limit and see how that affects any possible charges. Example, if it is proven that you were exceeding such advisory speed limit...... >:D  Kevin

I got busted speeding on my first trip to Fraser Island..

I was somewhere approx 80-100k north of Gympie when it happened..

I said to the cop that I had not seen any speed signs for quite a while..

He told me that that:

"if there are no speed signs (on open/country roads) - the default speed limit is 100kph.....      Here's your ticket; have a nice day"....     :police:      >:(      :-*        grrrr
You get out and in to the world -- you take more @#&$. …You climb a little higher, ..you take less @#&$.  …Till one day -- you're up in the rarefied atmosphere -- and you've forgotten what @#&$ even looks like….  Welcome to the layer cake son.

Just to note on the advisory  yellow signs.
In some places/states for Heavy Vehicle there ARE the maximum speed limit.
Life's wasn't meant to be fair.
Well so I've been told. ..

I believe there is ,and has been, as long as I have been driving >55yrs, a "prima- facie" ?speed limit of 100kmh in NSW, unless sign posted otherwise. eg on a freeway......

Not sure about other states.

May be corrected as old age sets in.     LOL.

Hi Luckydog

What maps are you using on the Hema 6 ???
I have a hema 5 and have had it updated with the Hema 6 software ( cost $80 ) and mine shows the speed I am doing when I run ozi or the street mapping

Found this...

http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/roads/safety-rules/road-rules/speed.html

If you believe Wiki.....this is common to most States..

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_limits_in_Australia

All states and territories, except WA have adopted Australian Road Rules, in some form.  Each state has tweaked the, slightly to fit their respective areas.  WA has the "road traffic code"
Which is a complete rework of the Australian Road Rules, and the only one to re umber the sections and add demerit points and other laws into it.
I also found the speed limit is 110 in WA as the default open road.
If you want to read the road rules relating to speed Google the state and road rules.  20-25 relates to speed.  Built up area is defined in the dictionary which is at the end of the road rules.
