Lada's were good....you didn't need tow points.
Turn the key one way and you had four forward gears + reverse.

Turn it off and start it the other way and you had four reverse gears +1 forward gear.

They would do 80kms going backwards or forwards..............my uncle had the redcliffe dealership and we used to beat the **** out of them at DI and Fraser......they were a joke but a pretty capable one.

I realy do love the shape.
I worked on a project in New Zealand for a guy called Fredrick Hundertwasser (he changed the spelling of both names like his undies) he was an austrian artist/architect the came to eventually live in NZ.
He was mates with Salvador Daily and was worth millions but drove a rusty Shit ty old lada niva with bald tyres and knitted his own socks and sewed his own pants.
Incredible bloke but he needed a new car.
I remember driving him to an auto parts joint and thinking "I'm driving a multi milionare to repco to get a battery for a car worth less than mine... what's wrong with this picture.
 This is what we built for him...explains alot.

Just about all dual cab utes are made in 3rd world countries and the quality reflects this. The Tata might be worse than the Thai made Tuk Tuk utes but by how much?

Tata also own Jaguar/Landrover so there will probably be some IP sharing going on there. Don't knock the Lada. I had one for seven years, doing outback clinics in the Gulf and Mount Isa region. Cheap finish, underpowered and too small a fuel tank definitely. But it embarrassed quite a few Landcruisers and Patrols with its light weight and 4WD ability. And I sold it for what I bought it for when I traded up to a 100 series LC!

Have had a few Lada Nivas over the years. Joke all you want they where amazing little machines that left quite a few of my Patrol and cruiser driving mates red faced. I got my modded up SWB patrol on muddies in all sorts of bother up Thompsons Track (worth looking up on google) back in NZ completely bogged and stuck fast half up the doors. None of the 4X4 Club guys where interested in going up to help get us out so went home bought a $500 Niva on road tyres and went back a day or so later. Made it up there without a worry and back down. Turned around and sold it a week later for $1000. Things you do when young and dumb ;D

AFAIK, the ford ranger, mazda bt50, Holden Colorado and Toyota hilux are made in Thailand and their build quality is as good as anything else around in that general price range...

Thailand made is cheap, why did the Japanese move production there. I had 2 Tritons, one was an older MK which was great and then i got a MN, total rubbish. Cheap and nasty, unrelieble and cost a bomb to service and repair. Back to Japanese built for me.

as an owner of a 2012 mazda bt50, i guess we'll have to agree to disagree  :)

i am curious to know which dualcab is fully japanese made?  not trying to stir, genuinely curious...

Things are made in Thailand because labor is cheap.  Most Japanese manufacturers have plants in Thailand. Still run by Japanese and made to their standards. Some of these factories are identical down to the size and layout. 
Has nothing to do with the quality of the product they build. If its crap in Thailand it will be crap in Japan too.

Went from 2010 Triton single cab to 06 Patrol single cab. And loving it, 4.2 liters of goodness. No more cart springs, drum brakes, puny fuel tank, electronics that fail, gearboxes that fail, clutches that fail, flimsy running gear......... i could go on but you get the idea.

Looking at the specs the tyres and wheels sizes  235/70 R16  don't seem to be as large as the Mahindra  245/75 R16, and does not appear to have the locking diff as the Mahindra, but just everything else is seems up there and it's nice the see that the Tata has Electronic Stability Control

Should the Tata Xenon be completely dismissed as a 4wd to be considered if you looking to purchase a 4wd in the sub $30000 mark  -- I guess that is more the question.

Mate of mine works in the warranty division at Mitsubishi Australia.  When I was looking at Purchasing a Pajero I quizzed him about typical issues being raised during the warranty period.  For the Japanese made Pajero he said the issues were far and few between, and said the typical issues he had dealt with were minor and easy fixes.  He made the point of comparison that the Thai built Triton, although a different vehicle, shares some components with the Pajero, but the warranty issues and problems for this vehicle were enormous. 

He said that inside Mitsubishi it was acknowledged the lower quality and higher failure rates were most likely due to the poorer quality controls outside of Japan.
