If I wasn't around 200ks from Townsville I'd be interested in meeting one of my heroes for sure mate. ;D.
Enjoy Charters Towers. If you get the chance take a drive out to the Burdekin Dam.

I'm not home at the moment, but park at the end of Cay St Saunders beach, walk south along the beach to this creek, there is a big snag in there, barra, jacks and the occasional largish salt water croc, water maybe a bit cold for the barra, but i nailed a couple good jacks there recently (released), barra go nuts in there in summer.  Whiting should be on at the beach too, also for whiting, go to bushland beach pub walk straight out on low tide there's a big gutter a few hundred meters out, will get whiting there, drop a few off at my place out there  ;D watch out for wandering croc at bushy beach, the bohle river is right there and we do currently have a 4m plus saltie wandering around, have had several beach closures recently in town from him and they have herded him back to the bohle, however he keeps reappearing all over town so he's extremely unpredictable currently, rumour has it, the experts think he is sick and been kicked out by a dominant croc...i just think he is hungry!  here is a pic of the Saunders beach spot.  good luck

What are the water levels like out at the Towers mate? I will be heading out there Friday, hopefully to Lolworth Creek near Big Bend but am worried it will be dry.

Hi Xcvator,

Sorry, only just saw this thread as I've been mostly reading myswag on tapatalk recently so seem to miss a lot of posts.
Might be too late?

Not a lot of good free camping close to town. Beaches to the north are popular.
Rollingstone has some free camping, but often full of grey nomads. There is a big 4 at Rollingstone Beach as well. Great spot on the beach, but usual Big 4 not-so-cheap prices.
Similarly, Balgal Beach, Saunders Beach, Bluewater you can camp overnight (or maybe 2) but have to beat the grey nomads to the spots  ;D
You can camp at Insulator Creek on the beach  -  up near Crystal Creek about 45mins north, but Council was clamping down on beach camping though - not sure if they are still on the case. Usual quota of bogans on bikes on weekends but probably quite during the week.

Keelbottom Ck west of Townsville is maybe a bit far away. Been a bit dry but still water in it last I heard.
Alligator Creek NP is about 1/2hr drive sth.

There is a new place just west of town  - Herveys Range Quad and Bike Park I think it is $10pp per night.

Land based fishing - The breakwater wall out behind the casino is popular.
