Who uses wireless NBN?

Thought I'd ask you lot that may be using wireless NBN how good it is.

We currently have ADSL, but it is revolting, and frequently problematic.  My provider whom I have been with since the start, said we are too far from the exchange and should be happy we even have it!  When it rains it is worse, with the lines deteriorating until they break- we know the technicians quite well!

To top it off we have minimal mobile reception, although the community was pushing for the telcos to add their antennas to the tower, but that hasn't happened yet.

A NBN wireless tower has been constructed 3km away (direct line), with umpteen million trees in between.  No I cannot see the tower. 

So I am trying to decide should we stick with what we are 'lucky' to get, or should I try out the new system. 

Should I wait until they tweak out glitches?

What if it is more unreliable than what I had?

my mum and dad recently moved from a crappy satellite service to a fixed wireless NBN service with iiNet.

they went from 1Mbps to 23Mbps download speeds.  in short, it is fantastic.

they pay $65 per month for 50GB downloads (more than enough for them), free installation and free modem.  installation of antenna was painless and so was hooking them up.

mum and dad's house was not in the specified coverage area.  they live in a valley between two mountains and the NBN tower is on one of those mountains.  they did have line of sight to the tower, but live at the bottom of the mountain where it was located.

we spent about 6 weeks going back and forward with nbnco, providing them GPS co-ordinates of the house and in the end, they said that we could get the service.  once we got that confirmation from nbnco, we went to iiNet for the service install.

bear in mind too, that even though you are near a tower, you may be ineligible to actually get the fixed wireless service.

i found it easier to go the nbn website (nbnco.com.au) and plug in your address and see what the result is.  if you have any queries, give them a call as they will be where the isp will go anyways to see if you are in the coverage area or whether you are eligible.  make sure you get a request number from nbnco when calling to make follow-ups easier.

I've seen Wireless NBN up here and it works great.  I don't know if all connections are the same but from what I've seen it had a solid 25/5Mbps connection with sub 50ms latency - admittedly this was over pretty flat ground without trees.

I'm pretty sure they won't install the hardware if they can't provide a quality service, maybe give NBNCO a call and see what they say.

We were in pretty much the same situation.  Allegedly had or was paying for ADSL 2 and getting whopping speeds of about 0.03mb/p.  They recently offered wireless and on the NBN site said it was available but for a long time Telstra said my location was not suitable.  Others in the area had tried the Fixed Wireless option and repeatedly complained about the service, either not getting it or dropping out and running very slow. 

Made some inquiries and Telstra finally said yep Fixed Wireless for my area.  Made a few inquiries to find where the tower was and through the trees we can see where the tower is.  Made the arrangements for the NBN guys to come out and use their gear to determine the signal we get.  First reading was 92 standing behind where we park the vehicles.  With that they went ahead and put the 'dish' on the roof and hooked us up. I don't think the guy on the roof was all that good on roofs and I reckon he could have found a better place to mount it but he said the signal was 86. 

We are all hooked up and running pretty good.  Can watch clips in HD without having to buffer at all.  Pretty happy really.  Also Telstra said as we are also in an area that has blackouts, the old copper line will stay in place so we have a home phone that works regardless.  The NBN phone requires power to work so we have never hooked that side of it up. 

This is what we have now.



Until such time as they come out and take a reading of the signal, which costs you nothing, you will never know.

What would be the best way to go about getting this looked at. We are on the very end of the copper line which is around 8km from the exchange and get really bad service. We are paying for ADSL2 and get nowhere near the speed we should. Maybe this is a way to get a better service from Telstra

i'd be talking to nbnco directly first and explain your situation... if there is a tower near you, then you might be lucky...

you could possibly go to the ombudsman for advice as well...

nbnco are actually not that bad to talk to about things like this... 

if it makes you feel any better, mum and dad have a 30 year old copper line, about 20kms from the exchange...

Check and see what NBN is offering in your area to start with.  If no NBN, go back to Telstra about paying for a plan they are providing.

Ah dont worry about the trees, the microwave signals are strong enough to cut through brick.......

Just up the private medical insurance & make sure you're covered for brain tumors

If you have ADSL or ADSL2 make sure your modem is plugged into the phone socket where the line first comes into your house. We had trouble with slow speeds or the net dropping out all the time. A Telstra tec came out and found the line that ran to the modem was ok for a phone but not the net. Moved the modem , now we have good speed and no more dropouts.

/rant   We are about to have on of those F@#king towers built 130mtrs form our front door. No way to stop it happening, we bought out of town to get away from that crap.

Talking to Real Estate agents, thats going to knock 10 - 15% off our property value 

If I ever meet Malcom Turnbull I'll stick it up his aXX sideways, might make me feel a little better about losing 150K because of this Shit out dated service. /end_rant

We come up on all the maps as in the 'coverage area', so that's a plus.

I might have to bite the bullet and see what the signal is like.  I am secretely hoping next door tries first, as they have the same issues  .

We have had four teams from NBN come out to assess our location and four times it has gone into their "too hard basket" why?
Because they have to dig a trench 250 mts long from the road to our house so on we go, next round of calls.
